I thought the same thing. I bought a TCI converter, it lasted two months and then a sprag or bearing broke inside and puked all of that metal into my trans. The worst part was that they would not warranty the converter. I bought a Yank converter and have never been happier. The Yank converter is much nicer to drive on the street and had a higher stall than the TCI.
Curious to see what you go with and how it works for you. I had heads, cam, intake, LT's , tune, rebuilt transmission , convertor etc...all done at the same time last winter...they recommended a Circle D billet 3600 convertor. My car is a cruiser never tracked, I HATE it! Lose around town , motor revs and feels like you are barely moving when cruising around. Or you have to put your foot in it to make it feel good...it's something I definitely want to change!
