Dipstick hash mark - fluid amount
I recently did a fluid and filter change in my trans.. And have a few questions.. Hopefully someone can help me out.
I added 5 quarts of fluid.. upon checking fluid level, it seems to be roughly 1/4 inch above the hot line/hole.
1 should I drain some out asap? Or is it ok to be over slightly?
2 Would it be correct to assume this is about half a quart over?
3 Do the dipstick hash marks represent 1 quart from low to full?
Thanks for any help in advance guys !
Being a little over full on the stick as mentioned can help avoid emptying the pan on shifts particularly the 2-3 shift however a good deep pan even from a truck will usually solve this also. We use the deep truck pan on all our units with the exceptions of the corvette and of course the Black edition gets a much deeper pan,
Next time you do an oil change....do it at your house and let it drain over night. Preferably with it slightly jacked up where it needs to be so its at an angle where ALL of the oil can drain out of the oil drain port over time. Don't let any stay in the oil pan.
Then the next day put the oil drain plug in and pour in 3 quarts right away. This should not show anything on the oil dipstick...BUT if it happens to show a tiny bit on the end than you know that means you have 3 qrts. Then pour in the 4th qrt. and wait about 20 minutes for it to settle into the pan. Put your dipstick in. Pull it out and with a file....mark the dipstick as 4. Then pour in the 5th qrt and wait 20 min. Then again...mark it as 5. Then pour in the last 1/2 qrt.....or the 6th qrt if you're one of those guys.....mark that as FULL.
You can even use a punch set to put the numbers 4 and 5 on the dipstick.
If you want to get ****.......make a mark inbetween 4 and 5 for 4 1/2 qrts.
DONE.

Well since the OP is asking about transmission fluid level, I'm sure marking the engine oil dip stick will certainly come in handy.

Best way to ck is with the pan off, dip stick installed, ck that the full mark is level to a
hair above the pan rail, but not below (I shoot for about 1/8 above). All of the hash mark should see fluid.
When I have had to mod a stick, I make a new mark where I want the fill mark.
