I'm in the same boat and haven't made up my mind yet. My biggest concern is the added weight of the 80e. Doesn't make sense in my mind to add weight to a car just for the ability to cruise around at lower RPMs. Maybe if I was planning on attending a power tour or traveling over 100 miles routinely I could see the benefit. For a car you go for ice cream in or cruise to work a few times a month, I don't see a benefit to the added weight.

Weigh a 400 then weigh an 80e
If you can't handle the weight difference, then you better be a hardcore racer looking for every tenth or hundredth

I agree with this. Weight shouldn’t really be an issue unless you’re racing primarily. My GTO is full weight. In fact it’s heavier than stock. It has a full interior and extra reinforcement. Again, primarily a street car. If you removed your interior and were looking for weight reduction for a race vehicle then I’d agree. Otherwise the way I see it is a nice durable stout piece of machinery and I for one like cruising the street in a heavy car. Not planning on setting records here haha

If you're only driving 60-70 mph, then the 400 is king, point blank....period. Why spend all that unnecessary cash on the 80E? Get the converter right, and the 400 is fine everywhere, freeway and all. I street drive my '00 SS in the heat of summer with a 9.5 PTC (5200 on the brake), and zero heat issues to speak of. And as for freeway driving, 70mph @ around 2500 rpm.... not bad imo. Not by any means saying that the 80e is trash...because it's clearly not, but just save some cash and hassle and do the 400.

I have 3.55s, 28" tires and 4l80e and can honestly say that od isn't needed. If your on a 28" tire you'll be comfortable cruising 70mph with a th400. I went 4l80 for the lock up at the track for that extra tenth.

But 1000+whp, well you'll see. Been there done that. It cost my hard headed *** a lot of money to come to my conclusion. Best of luck.
This is because most racers are racing and not on forums. Haha!

I’ve had a 80 in my junk for over ten years. Started with a manual vb then D1 and now CK’s D3. All have worked great. Currently 1000+rwhp and deep into 5’s at 3700lbs. Drove 70 miles round trip to work yesterday, so yes still a street car.

I'm here on the forum and out racing multiple cars :-) and having tons of fun doin' so!

Anybody interested in some broken connecting rods from my funny car?

With the current tune... 7 passes is one too many for the rods to stay in one piece... LMAO!
I'll make a note... no more than 6 passes on this tune, got it! :-)

If it worked so great why did you keep changing stuff? Your deep onto the 5's at 3700lbs with the twisted up G-Body in your sig? I would have to see that to believe it.

The day I made that post We went to the track and made 8 passes so again, whats your point. Haha! I'm at the track every weekend they are open, and sometimes if i'm off work on wed too. Nice try at being a smart *** though, but doesn't apply. LOL

It's a A-body!!
Well, I started with a nitrous sbc so I went manual VB running 6.80's and eventually 6.20's (once I got the body roll figured out). Then I switched to a LS TT efi setup and tried the D1. It worked, well but too much shifting for me. So now a D3, which is awesome.

And If you don't believe me, meet me at the track sunday night! But for now, here ya go....
