Are you using a bearing or a stock washer
If using a washer...I would leave it the heck alone. Too tight and you'll eat up the washers

If you're going to machine it for use with a bearing...then you can set it up much tighter.

What are you trying to achieve by shimming the carrier?

Are you setting the rear transmission end-play?

Or are you setting the reaction carrier end-play?

There are two distinct ways to go about setting these clearances...

Reaction carrier is meant to float. There is no factory measurement for its endplay.

.050-.080 of travel for the reaction carrier is totally normal

If you're going to shim it, you might as well shim it to preload the geartrain...this keeps it running true center and it also ensures the band runs on the same place on the drum all the time

Stock, 0.0500"-0.0800" obviously works just fine...

However that amount of clearance leaves quite a bit of room for improvement.

I much prefer to obtain a 0.0100" clearance for carrier float.
Sonnax sells factory type thicker 4 tang thrust washers for the reaction carrier to output carrier location and output carrier to case location.

However since well all usually throw the factory 4 tang thrust washers in the garbage... I use two THM350C pump roller bearings and corresponding shims for rear end-play and reaction end-play.
Machine a bearing pocket into the reaction carrier of the loose OD of the bearing and to a depth of about 0.0800".

Now on the bench, assembly the transmission/ gear-train as normal for measuring end-play, up to the center support with the sun-gear shaft and main-shaft installed.
Install a dial indicator as shown, measuring between the top of the center support and top of the main-shaft.

Record a measurement with a reaction carrier roller bearing installed and the carrier floating free of the center support and output carrier.
Then shim up, until the center support is raised off of the reaction carrier.
If the last shim installed has raised the center support off of the reaction carrier; record how much the center support was raised (example 0.0080")
Use the amount the center support was raised by and add 0.0100" to determine how much shim thickness to remove for a Ten Thousandths end-play.

Example here, remove 0.0180" for Ten Thou clearance.

LOL! close but no cigar! :-)

My instruction are very similar but they are not identical... Most of us have been using a Lathe to establish end-play for transmissions for decades... this is nothing proprietary.

Same photos by Chris at CK... but my photos are sourced from Gears magazine March 2016

Dude how are you a LS1 enthusiast? and do not know how to spell the General Motors "Vortec" terminology correctly? LOL!

Just get the extra thick sonnax washers. No shims needed

I can't seem to find them...maybe they weren't sonnax? Sorry, my mistake
Sonnax does make a shim 34006-05 that will work

I know there are different thickness 4 tab washers...I just can't seem to find where I bought them last

gm 12 bolt carrier side shims work also if you don't wanna spend the money on the sonnax shim.
You can shim multiple places to get this clearance tightened up
