Default 4l80e can you hone center support bushing?

Center support on a 4l80e. I installed a new bushing and i screwed up the lip a bit bashing it in. I honed it with a brake hone so it is flat again, but half the babbit bushing is honed now and not smooth like out of the box.

is it ok that the bushing is honed? Are those honing marks from the brake hone ok?

I wound up honing the entire bushing because it was very tight around the sun gear shaft. Is that kosher?

Most automotive power-train bushings/ journal bearings/ hydro-static bearings can be honed, sanded, clearanced, ETC... depending on the material and/ or coating.

In this situation yes, you could hone the bushing and wet sand it relatively smooth again...
However, more than likely the clearances may be too great in doing so (If clearance was good to begin with).

It would be so much easier and more likely less time consuming to simply replace the bushing.

this is a brand new bushing. I honed the whole thing. How smooth does it have to be?

Yes, you will find after a fair amount of power-train rebuilding that there are a good amount of bushing that are not precision made...

You will have to size the bushing in between the corresponding parts and inspect/ measure for proper clearance.

Aim for aprox. 0.0015" clearance.

Very smooth.

But I am also extremely particular/ OCD about every aspect of everything...

I honestly would buy another bushing, and make it a double groove bushing over the single groove that you have.

But again, that is my OCD.

You likely mushroomed the top of the bushing when you installed it.
You probably could have de-burred the top ridge and been fine

My vote is also replace. Shouldn't have to hone this bushing at all when new

Good point!
I would highly recommend purchasing a $100 cheapo hydraulic press from a place like Harbor Freight over beating the new bushings in.

If is was a good bushing from any of the many name brands, and not one produced by a 4 year old in china... It should have fit well as is.

I will have to look one up for you.

I have not purchased a center support bushing individually for "late" lube units in a long time.

I would replace. I warm up the part the bearing is going into and freeze the bushing on my bushing installs. It helps to prevent this. FYI
