Default What year transmissions interchange 100%?

If I need a new 4L60e or one from a salvage yard, which years interchange electrically (same plugs and pinouts)? For example, if I had a 2002 model originally, would a 2008 one bolt and plug right in?

Same question for a 4L65e or a 4L80e....

Thanks.

No.

4L60E productions runs for model year interchangeability are:

-1993 only
-1994 only
-1995 only
-1996 - 2000
-2001 - 2006
-2007 - 2008
-2009 - 2013/ 2014

Note: 4x4 4l60e units are not a direct swap with 2 wheel drive units...

Thanks. So if I’m in the correct year band you have above, they will connect up correctly? Does it matter if truck vs car, electrically?

Safe to assume 4L65e year bands above are similar?

For example, I’m wanting to go from an AWD 02 Escalade 65e trans to a RWD one and might have found a GTO 65e a few years newer in good shape. Hoping it bolts and plugs in, and all is well.

What makes them different? I'm going with a Terminator X-Max, so I'm assuming 4L60 = 4L60? its a swap in to a jeep YJ/Wrangler.

yeah, they definitely don’t mention having to know what year 4L60e you have to set it up

Most aftermarket transmission controllers for the 4L60E family of transmissions... (4L65E, 4L70E, and 4L75E are all actually 4L60E transmissions with higher vehicle weight ratings) will support any year transmission that uses a "Pressure manifold switch" on the valve-body.
All years from 1993 to 2008 use this system.

The 2009 to 2013/ 2014 transmissions use an "Internal mode switch" and not very many aftermarket transmission controllers support this system.
The TCI/ FAST branded "EZ-TCU" transmission controller is the only product that I know off the top of my head that will support the "I.M.S. system".

Car (2 wheel drive) and truck (4 wheel drive) transmissions are not a direct swap.
4 wheel drive 4L60E transmissions will have a shorter output shaft that will go into a transfer case via an adapter.
2 wheel drive 4L60E transmissions will have a longer output shaft, that will pass through a tail-shaft housing for a drive-shaft.

If you shop around enough for an aftermarket transmission controller...
You will start to see a notation stating: For all 4L60E models up to year 2008.

Thanks. Yes, I knew the physical differences in 2 wheel and 4 wheel drive, but was more concerned if the computer and electrical connections differed.

In 2010 I replaced my 98 Z28 4L60E with a 01 WS6 4L60E. No compatibility issues and running fine today.

-1994 only -----1993/4 are compatible together. No changes needed to swap between these 2 years

-1995 only Dual PWM. Solo year
-1996 - 2000
-2001 - 2006----Electronically all the same. No issues swapping here

-2007 - 2008 These are backwards compatible to 1996. Meaning you can put an 07 in a 1997, but not the other way around
-2009 - 2013/ 2014 These eliminated the 3-2 downshift solenoid (useless solenoid anyway) and will not work with the older years. Will throw a code because the solenoid is missing.

Note: 4x4 4l60e units are not a direct swap with 2 wheel drive units...
I've made some notes above regarding the ELECTRONIC differences.
1993/1994 swap no problem
1995 one year only
1996-2006 electronically all the same
2007-2008 Added Input shaft speed sensor. These can be backward-swapped to 1996. The ISS will just be "ignored"
2009+ has ISS but eliminated the 3-2 solenoid. These can not be swapped backwards. 2007-2008 CAN be swapped up into the 2009+ because the 3-2 will just be "ignored"

All these notes do not account for input shaft/pump/stator changes.
Case changes for Neutral safety switch
2wd vs 4wd
etc

These notes are JUST for the electronic differences

With all of these noted...I can make any year core work with any year pcm. You just need to know what vb/pump changes/modifications need to be made. But...for any novice, you're better off finding a proper year compatible unit

Thank you for the thorough rundown. Now you have me concerned about the input shaft part... what should I be aware of there and commonalities? Thanks.

245 (short)
298 (nipple type)
300 (long) often called "LS" Style even though that's not really accurate.

They each need to match the stator tube and the converter to work properly

Thanks. So as long as I get my torque converter with my trans, I’m likely ok. I wouldn’t go far away from my current 2002 model year anyway.

Maroon Monster just gave you all the correct information "Electronically" speaking except for the 2009 and up units.

He forgot to tell you about the change over to the Internal Mode Switch from the previous Pressure Manifold Switch.
You can take a 2009+ unit and retrofit an earlier valve-body, solenoids/ switches, wiring and PCM if needed.

Would a car 4l65e from a gto have the same size (length, location, pivot arm, etc) gear selector mechanism as a truck 4l65e from an Escalade? I’m likely using a Lokar shifter arm from my old C10s steering column to this transmission, and would want it to reach the gear selector with no problems. I’m not sure if one (truck vs car) would have a more accessible arm for that to grab or if they’re the same/close enough.

In terms of the lever (that is held on the manual selector shaft/ shift shaft with a nut) and the linkage/ cable bracket that bolts to the oil pan rail...

There are slightly different versions of these used on different platform/ body vehicles.
However, if your Lokar shifter/ gear selector fitted/ worked with the 4L65E that is currently in the vehicle...
You should not have a problem (if they are different) as you can install the old lever and bracket onto the transmission that you are obtaining.
They may not be different/ or may not be very different... but if they are, use the pieces from the last transmission.

In my discussions with their tech support I got this:

Asked if there were any issues on which gen 4l*** tranny I picked..

Holley tech support...
4L60, 4L65, 4L80 are supported. Steer clear of the 4L70 (supported but not simple to set up) and 4L75 (totally different animal in terms of control for some reason. Definitely skip it.)…

The general discussion was that the Terminator will run any of the transmissions, that the year wont matter. That it was more important to match the mechanics to the engine.
The one point I'm still looking in to is the speed sensor,, I am doing a 4x4 and I think,, I'll have better luck with putting the speed sensor ahead of the transfer case. Otherwise I think I'll have ECU issues in 4 wheel low.. Unless I can use a input telling the ECU to change mapping when in low range..

This tech department person needs to either be educated...or taken off the phone

the 4l60/65/70/75 are all the same transmission. They have different strength upgrades...but they're the same.
If it works for a 4l60e it will work for any of the others

If you're doing a 4x4 you'll need to put a sensor in the transfer case. There isn't even a provision for a sensor anywhere else when building a 4wd unit

I definitely agree!

The only 4L60E based transmissions that do not have good aftermarket controller support are the 2009+ units with an Internal Mode Switch.
