Regarding the quotes I went and asked 3 places around here for 3 quotes and that's what I got. I'm not pressuring these guys to do it cheaper due to my car being a turd. I think your point (along with the guy before you) is to steer clear of the $850 option. I doubt that's even a firm price. It's a small shop and the guy on the phone wasn't the owner. He said they "typically" run around $850 for a 4L60E for a bench rebuild not including the converter.
Don't take things so personal. Crap Box and average Joe were just general statements that were not pointed at anyone. The parts list for a good rebuild is close to the amount you were quoted. Did not mean to insult you, just trying to save you some heart ache. My apologies. The choice is yours. Just remember you get what you pay for, if you're lucky.

No worries here The only thing I'm upset about is not rechecking the fluid level after the initial motor fire/test drive before beating on it.

No this is a local shop in BFE KS that mainly does transmission work. I don't know anything about them other than a car guy I know recommended them after they did the trans in his Tahoe a few years ago. For all I know it could be more than $850 if they tear it down and find more issues than they thought.

Local shop is doing mine, its a bench rebuild, I asked him for the spread and was totally honest on the how and the why and gave him the current stall pressures off 1/2/3/4 , My base is 850 till the guts are on the table, If I got lucky and all I have is tear down clean and replace 3/4 clutch pack I'll be close to the 850 end, if not its +extra parts and a bit of labor. The pressures are consistent across the gears, so we think the valve body is good. He's done a lot of manual trans work for me and I told him it would come from my garage to his shop and a final check out before it pulls any load(likely on a flatbed truck) .. Only reason I'm pulling it, is its a custom setup in a Jeep with a lot of belly protection hardware that would burn someone who didn't build it for a bunch of time..
Replacing the converter since the rebuild is not free either..

So, truck guy here.

I went through some issues with my 60e and several bench rebuilds. Cost me more then getting a quality unit from someone.

I hope it works out for you.

I personally wouldn't use anybody that wasn't highly experienced with these transmissions. Not that they are particularly complex as automatic transmissions go, but as the good threads on here reveal, there are a lot of nuances to getting them to work really well.

There have been so many threads over the years where a guy has his rebuilt by some local shop, only to have the 3-4 clutch pack toast itself 500 miles later.

The level of Correction/ Modification Minutia for this Transmission is rather high for most Automatic Transmission Businesses that do not somewhat specialize in the THM700-R4, 4L60E, 4L65E, and 4L70E.

Most anyone would be capable of doing everything needed for these Transmissions.
What it comes down to, is whether or not the Fine-Details/ Information is known by the Re-Builder.

Yep, hopefully this guy does as good of work on auto's as he does manual transmissions.
