Default 4l80e planetary question

Hey guys my front and rear planets have to much pinion endplay. They measured .030. So I changed all the needles and thrust washers and pinions are in spec.

So my question is I have no tool to stake the shafts, can they be tacked in with a tig? Or does anyone know of a tool I can use to stake in

Thanks nick

They can be Heli-Arc Welded...

But I do not recommend this if you have never done it.
It's too easy to screw up in multiple ways.

Someone here not too long ago posted about an inexpensive swedging tool.

I used to rebuild planets. I have a cold chisel that I rounded the chisel point to stake them with. I also have an old 3/8" wide rounded tip chisel that worked very nicely too. I don't have pictures of those to upload. I could take a few tomorrow and upload them. If it will help you out...

I use the shank i cut off an old HSS drill and ground into a swaging tool. The shank of a drill is very tough, but not super hard and brittle like the point or flutes would be.

Do you stake both sides at the same time? Or support and do one at a time

I do each side one pinion at a time. i use a hardened 3/8" bolt that I rounded the threaded end. I clamp it in a vice so that it will support the pinion shaft. Then you can stake the 4 on one side and readjust the bolt for the other side.

i do it essentially the same way, i just put my tool in a cheap arbor press and bash the top of the drive ram with a hammer to make the swage. i tried using a big pipe to get enough leverage but that just broke the cheapy casting of the press body.

and yep, one side at time, supported with a length of a tool steel from a rounded out torx impact that I drilled a hole partially into the arbor's anvil plate

i'll try and get a pic when im out in the shop next.

I do quite a few of these so it was worth it to invest the bucks in an easy to use set up.

Where do you guys find the planetary gear rebuild kits?

I'm going through a 4L80e for my brother and measured a few planet gears and also got around 0.030", and another one had some pitting. 🤕

Sonnax sells some of the parts and some of the guys even make their own parts in house to rebuild them.

Thank you. I have seen the Sonnax kits, but mostly out of stock. 😒 This is a 95 model if it matters. I'll keep digging.

BTW, that list that you made a recently is awesome!!! Thank you!
