The AFL Valve is most likely worn (usually the most common Valve-Body repair).
Install a New Boost-Valve and Sleeve Set.
New OEM Separator Plate.
No "Shift-Kit" is needed for this transmission.
1997 Model Year Cores need the Lube System modified in order for the Transmission to last.
I have a large very detailed Thread on the Lube System (search for it here or by Google Search).
Stock Clutches are good.
Dual-feed the Direct Clutch (search this forum).
Bushings most often need to be replaced.
Forward Drum may be shot after having a worn Bushing.
Install a new 34-Element Sprag.
Get a new smaller diameter Torque Converter.
Good luck and have fun!

do not do the "pressure relief mod"
the rest of the kit is what it is, but that mod usually fails and you get no boost oil and it smokes the unit really fast.

You won't be able to install half the stuff they send you
And a bunch of it you should leave out anyway even if you DO tear the trans down
The only thing of "value" in the kit is the separator plate...everything else there are nicer alternatives for on the market
And the separator plate is a multi layer POS that is nothing but a disaster compared to doing things the right way.
