Default Transmission Conversion

Ok guys! I am new to this so please bear with me. I have an 2007 Chevy Tahoe with a 4.8 non-police package. I am looking to put a police package transmission in it. Will it work electronically? I am just looking for some input. I dont want to spend the money on a police package transmission if it wont work. Any info you guys can provide, that would be great. Thanks!

Btw: my transmission is a 4L60E/M30 and I believe the police package one is the same.

I think you have been watching Blues Brothers too many times.
If your 2007 4L60e is working fine, then either leave it as-is, or consider installing something like the Sonnax or Transgo shift kit in it.

No my transmission is no good. But the non-police version is like $500 more than the police version. Makes no sense. So I wanted to find out if it would work.

Where are you getting the price on these units? the only difference I can think of is the ISS sensor or no ISS sensor.

I get the prices everywhere. Junkyards, and buying a bench rebuilt unit. I am an auto mechanic, but I cannot find any info on whether they are different or why they would be different.

Check out the Tahoe Yukon forum.com

Seems like the ppv package did not get any special transmission. Looks like it was the 4L65e for that year. Maybe it only got a external cooler, not sure.

I have never heard of a "police package" 4L6X OR 70 anything. To the best of my knowledge no such thing exists. and I am not even sure why it would. ?
I would just get you old trans built or buy one ready to go.

Yeah I dont understand it, but when I look it up, it gives me the options for ppv or non ppv. And then the prices are different. Its a very odd look-up. I have always known that a 4L60E is a 4L60E. I was just wondering if there was anything substantially different. Rebuilding my unit is almost $2600. A used unit my cost non-ppv is $1500, and a ppv unit is $1050. Makes no sense. And the warranties on the ppv is better. But no-one I speak to can tell me the differences or the reasoning behind such a difference. Thats why I posted here. To see if anyone has run into this before.

$1500 for a USED non-ppv vs $1050 for a ppv transmission sounds like a typo and rip off. They probably don't know what they are talking about. I would pick neither!

Get your unit rebuilt by a professional like @FranksCustomTrans

Follow this advice!
Someone is trying to sell junk to the uninformed. If a used-parts database is showing a difference between ppv and non-ppv 4L60E, it was unintentional and some shaddy rebuilders are taking advantage of it.
This forums has hundreds of threads started by people who bought "used" or cheaply rebuilt 4L60E and then wonder why they only worked for 500 miles, if they worked at all.
This honestly does not sound like "gambling" on a questionable trans, it sounds like flushing your down the drain and wasting time to boot.

I just checked on car-part.com for used transmission for your tahoe and they do list police and non police version for 2wd vehicle only. listing on this site and probably others as well are just using info that is available to them from the manufacturer. i would have to agree with others on this thread that an external oil cooler in probably the only difference between a police or a non police which does not affect any characteristics of the 4l60e.

Yes!! It just is odd that the pricing differs as much as it does. But if they are the same, I am going with the less costly.

Thanks!

i dug into this a little deeper because i don't want to steer you in the wrong direction. i'm assuming your tahoe is 2wd. looks like all the police versions are 2wd with a 5.3 engine. going further i checked on the Transtar web site for parts for a 4l60e for police and non police and i dont see any difference in parts. even the torque converter is the same for 4.8 or 5.3 applications. but here is what else i found. when looking up a complete transmission on Transtar they have a listing that says "5.3 rwd EXCEPT POLICE VERSION". so i'ts your call what trans to buy. maybe just the tag on the trans identifies it as coming out of a police vehicle with no other differences.

Thank you for your additional and detailed research on this.
