Type F is an inferior fluid (even compared to Dex III or generic Dex/Merc). I would not use this in a 4L60E, personally.

Even Ford doesn't use this fluid any longer.

I did ask him why type F...he said type F has fewer friction modifiers....the friction modifiers are not good for any clutch material in the tranny ....especially the converter clutch.....his words not mine

At the bare minimum I always recommend Dextron 6 to my customers. Out of all the fluids we tested before developing ours, it performed the best.

WOOO! Another trans fluid discussion!

I am looking forward to trying Transynd 668 when I rebuild the TH700 in my Box Suburban. I'm currently running John Deere Hygard, just for the hell of it after I did some valvebody modifications.

The current build I'm working on will be getting regular Dex III.

Type "F" was when they were still using asbestos in clutches and bands. Ford and some Mopars had this type of material till around 1977-78. It was banned by the EPA if I remember correctly. There were after market clutches for TH400 and TH350 transmissions, but never did they come with them in stock form. According to Borg Warner engineers I talked to many years ago about this. Type "F" has a better static clutch holding power (neutral to drive), than a Dexron type of oil, but was down about 14% - 17% on dynamic clutch holding power (any shifting clutch or shifting band). Forward clutches have never been a problem with holding power on 700R4/4L60E transmissions. Not even the 2004R which has small forward clutches. Shifting clutches or a shifting band on 700R4/4L60E transmissions, is where they have had problems holding up to higher horsepower in stock form. The latest Dexron VI is a good oil. Oils have come a long ways in the last couple of decades. There is more to it than just what is stated here. However, this will do in the vast majority of what oils to use here.

In the old days , it was used because it was though it was less lubricating and would give a firmer shift, Which may be true on some small level. But having sued both back in the day I didn't really see any difference Icould note by feel. Also it supposedly had a higher heat range than Dexron at the time.
todays oils are so so much better in really every way. Kinda why I am baffled when I hear builders and in particular converter people suggest it. It will almost certainly give you converter chatter when used with PULSE WIDTH MODULATED set ups and overlap roughness in shift like the 4L60E 2-3 AND 3-2 and or even the AOD, 4R70W od fwd on off transition.
Me I suggest and use DEX6 in most everything now days .

I've gotten some really good feedback from customers running Transynd as well. We haven't tested it. But I wouldn't be afraid to try it in my race car.

I switched to the transynd 668 at grady's recommendation and can confirm it's worth the price over normal dex 6. My turbo car went nearly 100 passes on the same fluid without a change in the color or smell. I was getting maybe 20 passes out of the acdelco branded dex 6.
