Is this a new rev drum? Or did you reuse and install new bushings? Or is this a machined drum with new bushings?

I reused the original and installed new bushings. Is that a bad idea?

It is a very good idea to replace the bushings, but most likely you have a burr on the ID of one of the bushings or the bushings are not straight in the bore. If driving the bushings in with a hammer a lot of time this will burr up the edge of the bushing where the drive hits the bushing.

I’m going to replace the drum, something is obviously wrong with it. It’s most likely the guy who installed the bushings fault (me!). Is there a preferred drum to go with?

Amazon Amazon
This is a new GM drum, Yes they are made in Taiwan, You can also get these in off brand like 20 dollars cheaper but still made in taiwan (honestly had both compared I think same one as cant find a difference) optionally WIT TRANSMISSION parts sells remans also fine.
As mentioned I have had little luck with installing bushings with bushing driver and hammer, I you do it must be done gently and slowly . To me a press is a must.

As mentios

A press is definitely the way to go. It can be done with a hammer, but you may have to massage the bushing a little to get it to fit right sometimes.

There is nothing wrong with installing new bushing and reusing the original reverse input drum if it is in good shape.

I’d say you’re right. I’m just going to buy a new drum. A friend is giving me an arbor press, which will be perfect for this type of work.

Yes an arbor press is ideal for this, but a hydraulic press will yield the same results
