No, the band does not apply in reverse. The band is applied in 2nd and 4th gears. The drum that the band does around is used in reverse and the low/reverse clutch pack in the very rear of the case. If the band is not holding you will have more problems than reverse. Like not 2nd or 4th gears also. Look deeper you have more problems to address.

Yes as stated a 4L60E the band has no effect on reverse.
No reverse with a 60e SUNSHELL STRIPPED. LOW PISTON BROKEN OR FRICTIONS BURNED, BROKEN APPLY PISTON OR BURNED FRICTIONS REVERSE INPUT DRUM . This all assuming a running unt that just lost reverse. If it is a new build with no reverse other things are possible. As BBOND105 said LOOK DEEPER . Though with a damaged band and no reverse I would say a full rebuild is in order anyway.
