This is what they state about the Redline D4 ATF
Our most popular and versatile ATF, D4 is suitable for use where Dexron III, Dexron II, or Mercon fluids are recommended. D4 ATF is designed to satisfy the improved low-temperature requirements which will be in the new Dexron IV specification, and the improved shear-stability requirements which will be part of the new Mercon specifications.
D4 ATF also provides a GL-4 level of gear protection, making it a superior product for transmissions and transaxles like the Corvette's T-56. Redline has prooven through performance that they make quality products. Their lubricants are used by professionals. I have to think that with the amounts of money at stake these people would be choosing the very best available in lubrication.
If Redline says it will work as a replacement for Dexron-III, I am inclined to believe them.

I was of the impression that any synthetic trans fluid wasn't good for the 4L60E. My understanding is that the synthetic blend causes excess slipping which in turn causes too much heat. Don't quote me on this but if I can find the thread where I read it I'll post the link.

Don't ask Redline. Ask the manufacturer of your
torque converter about how their clutches like
Redline's base & additives, and see about GM's
recommendation (easier to get, probably - "no
synthetics"). With all the different TCC materials
in use, there is a variety of fluid type sensitivities.
