Does anyone know the major differences besides the five pinion planetaries? I was wondering if it had different clutches or bands and such. Thanks for any help.

I would also like to know this question I just put a built GM performance 4L60E unit in my truck and come to find out I had a 4L65E the whole time. I blew it up twice however. Do they both weight the same? The built tranny with fluid in it weights 178 pounds. I have done a search on this on google and hotbot and cant find an answer.

 

i've got a 4L65E....(the GMPP version), the truck version has the same stuff in it but comes with a transfer-case compatible tailhousing. the GMPP version comes with a non-torque arm 2WD, Holden style tailhousing. (must be swapped off stock 4L60E in order to retrofit into f-body.)

same weight, same gear ratios...

-5 pinion planetary gearsets
-hardened/shot peened turbine, stator and output shafts
-hardened sun gear
-hi-energy clutch packs
-extra clutch in 3-4 pack
-recalibrated valvebody
-heavy duty low/reverse roller clutch
-factory deep pan ( i replaced this with a huge BBK pan anyway.)

i think that's it. basically it's your basic, lightly upgraded 4L60E. it's a nice piece to pop in if you can get it for dealer cost like i did, but otherwise it's a bit expensive. overall though, i'm happy with mine. hope this helps.

there are two minor differences...

1) The tailhousing has to be swapped off stock tranny because the one that comes on the L65 doesn't have mounting points for the torque arm. (its 6 bolts and took me 3 minutes to do.)

2) the manual shaft (aka the shift lever) that protrudes out of the side of the trans and gets hooked to the shift linkage must be swapped as the Holden/truck style shift lever is too long and hits the tranny tunnel. it's pretty simple, it's just a matter of popping the pan off and working the lever out from under the gear selector (the ratchet thing that moves as you select different gears.), then putting the stock 4L60E lever in it's place. i let a tranny guy do this step just for the sake of him knowing exactly how to do it and it took about 10 minutes.

 

Thanks DBz. How about electronics, will the f-body computer control the 4l65e? Does it plug right in?

Yea I got the 4L60E hi performance tranny from the parts deparment from the dealership I work for. I got it for dealer cost as well.
The part number is 12497318. The only complaint I have is, is it doesnt shift real hard. Shifts like a cadillac. Other than that I like the stall it came with and everything.
It actually stalls a little more than 2300. More like 2500.

 

that's a different tranny. the GMPP 4L65E is part #24221888.

 

Is the 4l65e a better transmission then the 4l60e? What years did GM use this transmission? I have a 1995 C1500 4X4 and have a chance to get a 4l65e with the transfer case and would like to know if this unit will work.

Yes, as long as you are comparing '98 or later 4L60E with a 300mm input shaft (all '98+ for LS engine are 300mm). There are no external or electrical differences.

Since there are some differences after 2006, affecting both 4L60E and 4L65E, tell us exactly what you are considering.

 

I've got an 04 Denali and it has a 4l65e and I'm just curious if I can drop a 4l60e in. It's also from an 04 with low miles.i know it won't last too long but I just need it to get by until I can afford to get my 4l65 rebuilt.

 

Yes, you can easily swap them as long as both are 2wd or both are 4wd

 

You would be surprised how long a healthy 4L60E will last compared to a 4L65E.

 

clinebarger, can you elaborate? They're sisters, so wouldn't a healthy 4L65E last as long as a healthy 4L60E?

 

Sure it would, I was just pointing out that the 4L65E isn't that much stronger. The extra 3-4 friction makes the biggest difference in the torque capacity. Which is easily made up with a 093 2nd piston & a larger boost valve in a otherwise stock 4L60E.

The 5-pinion Carriers, Hardened Stator splines, & Input Shaft are nice to talk about, But these don't really fail in a 60E in great numbers.
