Re: TH400
You can always go with one of the more "big name" companies such as Turbo Action, or TCI. They can build you pretty much anything you want. Since they do such high volume, there prices are usually pretty good, too.
For example, Jeg's lists a Full Competition TH400 w/o tranny brake for under $900...

Hey Todd the best thing to do to save money is to go find your own core in a junk yard. It will save you a couple hundred bucks.
Also email Joe K. about his cheap TH400 build up.
Depending on how much you want to retain you dont have to buy alot of stuff that some say you have to have.
I.E. things you can choose to leave off.
Speed Sensor and relucter wheel (250$)
Tranny Tricker(250$) Mine never worked
Adapter plate (175$) I dont use one with mine
Trans Brake (300$)
Things you have to have:
New dip stick (Lockar flexible dipstick)
New Drive shaft (TH400 Yoke)
New Converter
Shifter Can get cheaper ones though around 150$
Hope this helps Todd!

Coan sells them from 581 bucks (street performance version) and up the core charge is $150 bucks.
JW has nice ones too.
like has been said you merely need a driveshaft, crossmember, dipstick (we used a old school universal GM one and got it to fit decent), shifter, and converter. Not that bad really

Re: TH400
I guess it depends on you. I guess if I had 4.10s I would bitch about a 3 speed, but IMO this is fine. I drive my car at least 1000 miles a week with this TH400.
I did it for reliability, availability of parts and service for the tranny (any hillbilly at a gas station can rebuild a Th350/400) and for future plans.
Right now I have 3.23s and its fine. just yesterday got 20.8 mpg on the highway some times going over 100 mph too. Most 80-95 mph cruzing. It has a cam too so its not superior gas mileage cause of stock motor or something.
works fine for me and one day when I decide to break down and shell out the 2000 bucks for the Gear Vendors OD unit I will have the best of both worlds

Ryan, hey whats up
the launch is not bad with the gears set up, I have not taken it to the track yet, pretty tempting right now though.
I am running a PI Vigilante converter right now in the car. I would say comparable to a #6 pump for the 4L60E but with a little more stall and punch.
yes i have the cheetah in <img src="graemlins/fluffy.gif" border="0" alt="[Fluffy]" />
here are a couple quick picts

Re: TH400
sweet. Is there any way to move the shifter forward to not have to cut that notch? What could you use to seal it up around the edges? Sorry for all the questions. You can email me or PM me if you want. Oh, what all did you do/buy, specifically, for the swap? You gonna spray the car some more?

as far as moving the shifter forward...well I had a shop do all the work for me...they said it could not be done in my application...could it in yours? maybe...but unsure...its just that the Park position (all the way forward) is VERY EXTREMELY forward angled and it HAD to be cut to give it more travel....only thing you could really do would be raise it up alot more and cut out the console so the shifter sits on top of it almost. and again the notch in the rear has to be there to engage 1st gear position in a standard pattern valve body. So we did what we had to do. Also the shifter is raised up to get it that high up to the console....just bolting it on it was a lot lower. Aluminum block spacer material was used to do so.
what I bought was the converter, shifter and transmission.
The driveshaft they had made by a driveshaft shop, the crossmember they made in their shop, the lines they supplied and fit accordingly, the dipstick is a universal GM 70s one that they made fit decently and have some access to it...sits under the cowl some but was cheap and they did not know about the madman or lokar one that are pretty expensive and this one works fine.
only other thing you need is a speedo sensor thing from Yank or maybe your shop can rig something to make it work?
as far as spraying it again? hehe of course, I only took the car to the track once this year with the hughes equipped 4L60E, and a Vigilante 3200 with the extra clutch packs and it ran real well, but I know it can run better with this set up. I am still going about engine plans to spray it right now...I just drive it 1000 miles a week sometimes more so the track is not my first thoughts.
hope this helps and anything else feel free to post to me here or a new topic or email fasta4@hotmail.com

Re: TH400
hey how does the center console bolton? I was thinking what if you cut it and extend the back part. Put in sometime to fill in the gap then. ether get another center console from a scrap yard or something and put it over the gap you filled? Maybe x the rear cup holders.
