will 700r4 hold?
Im installing a carb'd 383 with approximately 500hp/500 tq into my 94. I was planning on using a 700r4 with probuilt street strip kit. But ive been seeing alot about people burning up their 4l60e's and was wondering what everyone else would do. Car is not a daily driver and will drag race occasionally. I am also looking to install a 3600 stall, and down the road a 9" with 4.10 gears.

It can work for a while. Notice I said can. The problem you will most likely run into will be clutch packs going out. If you are okay with putting those in once or twice a year then it might work. Key word being might in that sentence. If it is going to be a car that is rarely driven I would just go with a turbo 400. If you want the overdrive go with a 4L80E. More money, but can stand 800ftlb. from the factory according to Hughes.
EDIT::: I do speak from experience. I ran a 700r4 from bowtie overdrives in my 67 with nitrous to make 550 or so hp. Two clutch packs in one year gets old and expensive.
I also have gone to a 4L80e with an aftermarket controller. It will be up by the middle of March.

If it's anything like my 4l60e it won't last long. I had mine in and out six times this year with less than 4k miles on it. Lost third gear and two pumps. Just picked up a built 4L80e but have to buy the rest of the conversion kit before installing. I agree with lethal's response.

A 4l80e is better but...
I run a 700r4 built by performance transmission in MA, in my 79 Camaro. It is a daily driver and puts down 700hp at the rear wheels. It has been in there for 3 years now with no problems.
I did burn up two of them before I had this one built.

After tearing into this 4l60e I've noticed it honestly is a 700R4 just with a different (electronic) valve body. In fact, most of the parts I ordered (if not all) were 700R4/4L60E designated parts. Food for thought, I brought up the idea of a 700R4, but now realize I'd mostly be building an ancestor to the 60E.

This board is full of 4l60's and 700r4 with clutchpack issues all the time... along with most that try to run either with any power. You need to fire your advertising manager cause he is missing them with his ads.

Let me reitterate this, I have very little 3-4 clutch pack problems. The reason, is the "modified" Trans-Go Performance Shift kit, the Borg Warner Hi-Energy 3-4 clutches, Kolene steels, the Corvette servo, the correct clearances on the 3-4 clutch pack, the correct clearances on the 2-4 band, the HD boost valves, the vacuum modulator on 4L60E's, the correct clearances on the 3-4 clutch pack, the HD release springs on the 3-4 & forward clutch, the correct size feed holes in the valve body plate, etc. This is what has made the 3-4 clutch live for me in the past 9 years. As you see there is more to this than just the right type of clutches.
