Default Rebuilding tranny, what should I use for assembly lube ?

Just wondering what I should use for assembly lube. Obviously it will have to be something that breaks down once there is fluid in the tranny.

I've only done like two auto's in my life, but I worked next to the trans guy in my shop. He only used ATF. He soaked the parts before assembly. Then he would run through the gears with the wheels off the ground to avoid loading up the trans.

I never rebuilt a modern one but for my old van TH350
I just used ATF. Putting a moly/graphite engine assembly
lube in there I would fear contaminating the clutches.

Sealed Power (and I'm sure others) make a greaselike paste called Transjel that is used for assembly of auto transmissions. It can hold small parts in place, (i.e. checkballs, thrust washers, etc) and will not run off like pure ATF while sitting. It also dissolves on contact with ATF. It is an ideal lubricant for bushings, seals, and whatnot, but is not a substitute for soaking the friction plates in regular ATF before assembly. GM lists it in the factory service manual under special tools in the trans repair section. I'm sure a local trans shop would have or could get you some.

Use vaseline to hold any thrust bearings or checkballs in place while assembling. Otherwise ATF for the rest.

Transgel! But soak clutches in ATF!
