Hard shift from 1-2
Hard shift from 1-2 Just something I am curious about, the guy I got my car from was the 2nd owner, and knew nothing about what was done to it. Aside from flowmasters (which I found out at a muffler shop), I don't know of anything done to it.
Anyway, from 1-2 at mid to high rpms the car shift really hard, it jerks your head back pretty hard... 2-3, etc are no problem.
So what would cause this? I'm pretty damn sure it has the stock 'verter on it, since I don't peel out much from a dead stop on street tires with these 2.73s.
Any insight would be great, or if someone could say "yeah 98 A4s with 2.73s do that stock" that would be great to, just need some answers

Could be the fact that it's very easy to access the second gear accumulator, like during a fluid change if someone wanted to they could remove the accumulator (three bolts) and stack some nuts on the pin to block it's movement.
Or it could have a shift kit with the accumulator movement limited too much.
Could also be a broken accumulator spring or piston.
Come to think of it these problems would cause hard 1-2 at lower throttle too.

And it depends on if what I said is causing the probem or not.
Like GTO said it could have some tuning done. This could hurt the trans if the tuner didn't know what they were doing.
In my opinion on the 4L60's and 4L60E's, it real easy to get them to hit second gear hard, it can be done with the trans in the car.
They reason I say that is because my car hits second pretty hard(it has a modified transgo kit), then in comparason third and fourth don't seem so bad because in order to get them to hit just as hard the trans needs to come out and clutch work done.
And maybe most important look at the gear ratio changes, first gear is 3.06, when you hit second it's going to 1.63 thats a big drop. Then when it hits third is only going to 1.00, then fourth is .70.
I know what it feels like to shift hard enough to do harm but can't put it to words. For fun I've built a few transmissions with the intention of them having neck breaking, axle snapping shifts.
What they would do is shift so hard it would pop a drink out of your cup holder and drop the engine rpm instantly no matter how much power it had.
Thats the best explaination I can give.
The converter you're planning on getting will make the shifts less harsh.
It also depends on you, what a hard shift is to you might not be hard to the next guy.

yeah, 98 a4's shift that hard stock. Mine faithfully scratched the tires on the 1-2 wot shift stock. Nothing to worry about. Due to the crappy design of the transmission the 2-3 shift cannot physically shift as hard, hence the harder 1-2 which is a strong gear. just a little added fun when getting on it.
