3rd gear or Drive?

3rd gear or Drive? I was wondering if its better to leave it in 3rd gear or Drive when racing. Not quarter mile lengths but more like highway racing or just racing for a short distance when the traffic light goes green etc. etc. Thanks!

My street experience is to stay in 3rd for short jonts and sub-100 freeway fighting.
