Just curious as to how well as an average they hold up?

They are good for the stock car, but when you start modding, and adding a stall, etc, etc etc, building your motor...it will start to go...

For milder setups (400rwhp or under) you can get away with a really well built 4L60E (by FLP, Yank, or comparable local shop). For over 400rwhp, I’d start looking into turbo 400s for a long lasting alternative.

Well, guys like BradWS6 went like 600 passes on the stock A4 tranny with a converter, shiftkit and a cooler.

Trannies die more from heat than anything else.

I am making close to 440rwhp and my beefed up tranny works pretty well. I will make more like 450-460rwhp after my next dyno tune.

The stock 4l60e is not very good mien started to go when I was running 12.70's @ 110 mph... Do yourself a favor and don't waste $ on a "built" 4l60e. Get a TH350/400 with a t-brake.

That might be true for a track only car, but overdrive is nice on a street car. TH400s aren’t for everyone. Some of the built 4L60Es have been doing well.

Not to mention the killer 3.06:1 1st gear in a 4L60E is great for cars with smaller (numerically) rear gears that plan on staying that way.

WS6 Chew, you may have both of those things, but you also probably have close to 4k in your tranny alone....

I'll stick to the stocker until it goes.

I am putting a FLP 4l60e behind a Twin Turbo car so I will let you know how well it holds up. I will be running low power level around 400 rwhp at the start and also a stock converter.

"I'll stick to the stocker until it goes."

Right on captain obvious... Do you think I just woke up one morning and said "gee ill drop 4k into the car today!" ? I lost my 4l60e and stock converter at the same time. I just figured I never want to go threw this again and did it right the first time.

Well, my stock 4L60 was dead after about 60 passes. It had a short-lived, yet hard life My new FLP Level 4 trans is MUCH better and I picked up almost 3 mph at the track over the toasted stock tranny.

Well, I’m not ready to give up on the 4L60E yet. I’m having mine beefed up this spring, and I’m only going to be making about 350/360rwhp, so I doubt I’ll have any issues at that power level. If I was making sick power though, I’d probably think about more trans.

I had good sucess when i was just heads and cam..then went stroker after the stock motor went..then the trans went..had a local guy do it,got about 200 passes and it's slipping again..I will have it freshen up..Im not giving up yet,as I want to try and keep the car street driven..If I did the TH350 I might as well do the weight saving mod's too

Captain ********:

My first post was merely pointing out that adding OD to the TH400 is a very expensive alternative.

And FYI: Not everyone waits till their tranny breaks to replace it. LOTS of people (the majority, I would think) do it preventively or to pick up ET with the quicker shifts.

Onyx is completely right. My stock 4L60E is doing just fine right now, but I feel that beefing it up now will save me the hassle of downtime and possibly expensive towing charges later. Plus I do want the quicker shifts

Not all of us wait till something breaks to upgrade it...

Mine is in the shop now. Bad 3rd gear drum and bands. I think my problem came from my HPPIII shift firmness adjustment. I have one full season on mine with somewhere around 150 passes on it.

Captain Obvious:

As you can see I was only running high 12's when my 4l60e let go so a preventive tranny replacement would not have made much sense because the 4l60e is supposed to hold up to more then that... Don't take the Captain Obvious stuff to serious I'm just frustrated that the POS let go on me so quickly. I do not think that the 4l60e will ever make it as a long lasting performance transmission. I know the TH400 is expensive but when you look at it over the long haul so is rebuilding the 4l60e over and over again and futher more a "built" 4l60e is about 2000$ and from what I understand you don't even get any of the hard parts in the tranny upgraded like the drum ect? What is that? Why are they so expensive then? I think its to compensate for the breakage that the builder expects to have to deal with so they charge you for 2 rebuilds right off the bat. Think hard about it and do it right the first time.

Good luck.
