Default Dyno runs with a A4 tranny

Do any of you other automatic guys have a problem at the dyno place with your automatic? I took mine to a dyno here in England(military overseas) and they told me the only way to measure was to run in 2nd gear. Their dyno only calculates until 130MPH, and any other gear in my car downshifts so they can't get an accurate reading. Is their some trick to it, or is the dyno place not worth a crap. They seem really knowledgeable, so I don't think they are feeding me crap. Any info would help. Thanks,

2nd gear dynos will be 15-20 hp low compared to 3rd, but to answer your question, yes, your dyno place is crap if their dyno doesn't go to at least 160 mph.

So most dyno runs on A4's are done in 3rd? If so I will have to get with them and see if there is anywhere else to run a dyno. This is my first one to ever have done, so I wasn't sure with the gear thing. They asked me, because most of their buisness is with British make vehicles, and I had no clue. They were also saying that my drivetrain loss was like in the 90's, so it really affected my RWHP readings. What do you guys usually get for drivetrain loss? Thanks for all the info.

Most dyno runs for A4 are done in 3rd gear. 1:1

I agree with Patrick; their dyno sounds crappy. Save your money unless you have a problem you are trying to diagnose.

Good dynos have a hookup to the tranny that will keep the car in third and also lockup the converter.

Drivetrain loss for an automatic car with stock gears and converter is around 50 hp.

Yea I did mine in third, wound it up to about 3K and then stood on it. If you dont get your speed up you will spin on the dyno. Learned this out the hard way.

3rd gear, speedo was reading about 75mph,(2.73 gear) when you stand on it you have to make sure that it doesn't kick back down to 2nd-it will throw the reading way off.

from what i've heard from SLP....A4 driveline loss is about 20-22%......on most dynos u will have a shift spike before the readings become accurate...i did mine in 3 gear about 70mph...then wound it up to 6200rpm

Use edit to change your downshift tables to prevent the 3-2 downshift above 40 mph and lock the converter at WOT at 55 mph.

On the dyno, use D (or 3rd) and mash the gas at 42 mph and hit the dyno record button at about 60 mph after your converter has locked up. You'll get a good true read on your midrange and top end power. It is hard on the converter clutch.

I use this with 3.73s. Guys with 2.73 & 3.23 gears might want to increase those figures by 15% - 25%.

as stated, dyno pulls should always be made in 1:1 (3rd in an A4, 4th in an M6)

The correct way to dyno an A4 is to have the dyno tech put a "lockout box" type of scan tool on the tranny. Its like a stand alone tranny control. You can lock the car in 3rd regardless of speed. Also when i dynoed, The tech used the scan tool to lock my converter. If you have a loose converter, you'll leave all your power in the tranny on the dyno. I gained about 23 RWHP locking the converter.
