I have a Yank SS4200, I just helped a buddy put a PT 4200 in a buddies car. Your tranny won't blow from the TC install, you'll be fine as long as you don't abuse it.
My stock tranny lasted almost a year with over hundred low 1.5x passes before it blew, and I replace it with a built 4l60e.
The SS series is a great all around convertor, drives pretty nice on the street and hits hard at the track. A TC is a great first mod for any A4 car.

The SS series is not nearly as loose as the PT, it feels more like a 2800 on the street. It still has a high STR and kicks you pretty hard, especially with a good hook at the track.
I don't run a trans temp gauge, we put one in 1BADLS1's car when we did his TC, he got it from summit, just a standard autometer gauge.
My advice is to call Yank direct, tell them what you plan on doing with the car and what mods you have, they'll hook you up with exactly what your car needs.

I' m sure you' d be happy with any SS-series converter. I love my 3800. I have two 24K coolers, but, like you, want a guage too. Just paranoid. Don' t need to spend another $2K on a tranny after I just bought this thing...
