Floored it! on the 1 - 2 shift it tagged the rev limiter (odd)
and BANG WAWAWAWAWA{grinding/tapping noises}
I'm guessing this is what happened:
after the 15 months and 49,000 miles, countless trips down the 1/4 mile stressed the flex plate. I think it might have already had a small crack in it, because the starter made a very weird sound when the car would start. Just thought i broke a tooth on the starter...
So Eventually i think all the stress of it just snaped the crack open. After it cracked it hit the starter causing the mount to break and the grinding of it from the plate rubbing against it.
See, everyone that was there that night was like, you bent your pushrods. (which i've never heard of on an Auto) so i drove the 30 miles home.

oops hit the reply button to soon.....
so the next day I witht he help of Buschman, changed my pushrods in the 30 degree weather.
after we broke 4 8mm Craftsman sockets in the cold garage, we got them all out and they were perfect!!!
Tyson happened to stop by and i started the car back up and he said it sounded like it was in the tranny....I told him about the starter noises so we thought at first it was broken teeth scraping around in there.
I got under there and we turned the engine over a few times (no spark) and I saw the crack.

well I'm hoping it's a structural design flaw (yes it is) so when the recall comes they can just slap in a better one in there...oh and a 3600-4000 TC too

I think you guys are on to something with the design flaw
Something struck me odd when I looked at Edge Hawks pics....THE FLEXPLATE ON MY '98 IS
DIFFERENT! (I have an extra engine ready to assemble on a stand) The large thru-holes are 6 evenly spaced ~2" diameter holes (basically similar to what you see on an "ordinary" chevy flexplate), not the configuration with dogleg holes shown here. Looks like a stress concentration.

Here's the pictorial version of the reply
Edge Hawk's :
What's in my '98 : (you're looking at the back of the upside-down engine )

lighter & less $$$
I think it's BS, maybe the specs for my flex plate would be ok for a car with 29x rwhp (i think the 00 A4s)
but my car is pushing 320 rwhp & 338 rwtq. and it was 98% stock.

The 2001 & 2002 models have really crapy stock flexplates, when I did a TC change I coupled it to a TCI SF29 race grade flexplate, problem solved.

The other ones I've seen pics of, cracked at the thinnest
part of the web. This one is through the bolt hole and in
a fairly thick part. A bit atypical I think, no idea why.
But when I put my first TC I also swapped on an earlier
flexplate.
