Default Potential problem with the tranny in my Z?

My 00 A4 Z has 42k miles on it. I've had it since 19k miles and don't regularly get on it, but of course I do sometimes. Anyways, today my friend was next to me in his and I dropped it down into 3rd (D) and go WOT from about 30 mph. Well I hit about somewhere between 70-80 mph (not sure, I wasn't looking close enough) and all of the sudden I hit the rev limiter for just a couple times as it went to shift into the next gear. I was like WTF and backed out of it.

Why would it do that? My friend says that his 02 Z with 13k miles does that sometimes too. This is the first time mine has even done this.

Is this a big problem?

Ah screw it. I'm putting a stall on it. If the tranny goes, it goes.

First off, I've heard that you're not supposed to go WOT in OD because it isn't healthy for the tranny. Who knows? Because I've heard a lot of that stuff.

Second.... really? I'm looking for one new or used that hasn't been too abused....

Stall that trans, meanls1 on fast (mean02 on here) has a vig3200 for sale. Thats my converter and I love it. I have 45k but i regularly get on it and my trans has held in there. Also, my car does not like to have the shifter be played around with at wot, probably the cause. I wouldn't worry about it, however you should check the trans fluid level, and if its not had a filter/fluid change do it asap.

You probably lost the 3-4 clutch pack. If so, it's time to start shopping for a tranny rebuild. It won't just start doing that for no reason. At first mine would shift unless it the tranny was hot, then it would flare before shifting, then it stopped doing it at all.

Same here. Well, I didn't laugh, but I really, really wondered.

Now I daily drive a 4k stall with large cam and dumped duals. And I love it.

Thats the spirit, and dont worry about all that garbage about downshifting. Just put her in OD and let the computer controlled tranny do it's thing when you hit the go pedal. EVERYTHING is hard on the tranny unless you drive like grandma, so just drive the car and enjoy it.

98's are extremly sensitive to trans changes. To prevent my car from hitting the rev limiter on shifts, my 1-2 shift is set at 5600, actuall shift occurs at 6100 rpm. 2-3 shift is set at 5850, actual shift occurs at 6200.

If your converter is stalling extremly high on the juice, you might need to go even lower on the shift points.

(do we have a "werd" smiley here?) EDIT: I guess so!

I think your statement is very correct. Anything other than accelrating at an ant's pace puts strain and tear on the tranny. And I sure as hell didn't buy my car to drive it like that. Then again, I didn't buy it to beat the hell out of it, but I'd certainly like to have my fun.

Now the question. TCI custom 3,200 2.5 or an off-the-shelf TCI 3,500 2.5? The car is my daily driver. (ah, why do I even ask? Of course you guys are going to say the 3500 or even try to convince me to get a Yank 3800!) Anyways, the 3200 or 3500 are the only things I'm going to consider. I'd just like to have a feel that isn't too terribly loose and will do great at my daily driver. Thanks boys.

Scotty, what gears do you have? If you've got 3.23s, or if you do have 2.73s and plan to upgrade, get the 3500 stall. It's a good daily driver stall. I daily drove my 3200/2.5 for a few years and it was a bit too tight once I got used to it to be honest. If you're worried about looseness I think the TCI 3500 would be just right for you. For the converter, cooler, fluids, and everything you can get it in the car for under $600 and it will make a heck of a difference.

Josh,
I have the 2.73s right now As much as I'm not fond of them for acceleration, I like the mileage they get on the highway and they keep the engine revving low. I can be doing 80 mph at 2,000 RPMs, it's great. So for now I'm going to keep them. Maybe later down the road I might swap to some 3.42s, but not anytime soon. I emailed TCI to see what they'd say and I'm calling Kevin Winstead tomorrow to ask him personally. I'd like the 3200 for the slightly tighter feel and driving, but the 3500 might be nice for power. I'm not sure though, because some guys have said that the 3500 and 2.73s are extremely loose, despite the 2.5 STR. Maybe I could go with a 2.2 STR on a 3200 or something. Either way, I'm working 5 nights a week now, so the money should be coming in fairly quickly.

Get the most STR you can get IMO. 3200 would be nice for your first stall. I had my 3200 for two years before I changed it out (took me about a year to outgrow it I felt). I'm one picky person when it comes to my car, everything has to be just right. That includes not having a car thats too loose. I daily drove that 3200 for the longest without a single problem in the world. It felt loose for the first few days but after that it felt almost stock. The 3500 would be the best choice, and you might want to do the +1 thinking (one size bigger), but if it is something that really worries you, the 3200 will be just fine. You will lose a little at the track but it'll still be a vast improvement over stock, so unless you live at the track on the weekends the 3200 should suit you very well IMO. Just my .02 pennies.

If you are already thinking you might want something higher than a 3200, do NOT get the 3200. 3500-3800. And yes, this is a difference that you will feel whether you are at the track or on the street and just want to have some fun.

2.55 STR here with 2.73s. The car is loose, won't move till 1500-2000 rpms. As far as why he downshifted, it was because it's hard on the tranny from 4-2 or 4-3. Also bad is the 3-2 downshift. Upshifting WOT into OD is bad too but with 2.73s you won't hit that till 165mph or so.
