I say go big and let the rest of the mods catch up to it. May i suggest a 4400 if your keeping the stock cam and might go to a cam later or a 4600 if you know for sure your getting a cam soon.

Go for it! Even on a totally stock car the higher stall will perform better. When you match it up to bolt-ons and a healthy cam it'll only get better.

Don't forget a shift kit, tranny cooler (a must), temp gauge, drag radials and subframe connectors.

A 4000 stall and 3.73's will work really well with the stock motor ... let's see, premium gas is headed toward $3.00 a gallon, but hell, you don't care about gas mileage, right?

Go for the big stall. You'll love it at the track. I'm pretty much stock with a PT4000 stall and 3.42 gears in a Moser 12 bolt. I just ran an 8.13 1/8th mile spinning to a 1.79 60' time in 90 degree heat. I'm not sure I'd like more stall than I've got now but I see those that have gone even bigger with success. Next, I'm switching to 3.73's to see if I can finally sneak into the 7's in the 1/8th still putting down stock power. Good luck and have fun with whatever you decide to do.

My suggestion before choosing a stall. Plan ahead about what type of mods you want to do. What size cam you want to go with. Look at the cam and what size stall would be good for it. You don't want to get a 4600 stall if the cam you out in makes most of its power in the 3000 range. That would be my suggestion

Then in that case I would suggest getting a 4000 or 4200 stall

How much daily driving do you do? Since you are looking at a bigger sized camshaft then I'm guessing you aren't all that worried about driveability.. If you do ALOT of driving then a SSF3800 should do just fine.. Bigger is not always better and I know that for a fact. I've seen bolt on cars with stock LS1's go 7.60's-7.90's with 2800-3500 stall converters in them and then see the same cars swap to big 4000-4400 converters and not pick up any ET at all and not drive as good on the streets..

If you plan to use nitrous in the future then you don't want a BIG converter..

Is a shift kit absolutely necessary/required with a 3400'ish rpm stall TC?
Thanks

I don't mean to hijack your thread but I also have a few questions. I'm looking to get a 3500 stall I'm pretty much stock with the exception of a lid and a cat back. My question is do you need to do any tuning to the pcm for a larger stall, or will I be good with just a shift kit and trans cooler? And will I be ok with my 3:23s or should I go with 3:42 or 3:73 gears

You don't HAVE to tune, but it helps a lot. I got 12.4 untuned with my 4200, went back a weel later with a tune and did 12.06. You may bump the rev limiter some on stock shift points, and the torque management hurts. 3:23 is OK, if you want to run bigger tires 3:73 will help.
