Default Is from A4 to A3 the best move?

I hear that a TH350/TH400 is cheaper to build, maintain and is lighter. Is this true? Also, is it easier to get power through it as opposed to the 4l60e? How much lighter is it, and what kind of power difference to the wheels can one expect?

Also, what would you all suggest for a daily driver? I don't drive it daily, but I'd probably put about 50-100 miles on it a week. Would it be horrible on the freeway? What kind of gears/stall would you recommend? I am hoping for 400-450rwhp n/a and 150 spray on top of that.

welp, the only thing that's kept me from putting a turbo tranny in my car is the fact that you loose your overdrive gear, and i love to make those fast freeway runs. The guy that I rode with once had 4.11's and a TH350 and at 6k in 3rd gear he was at ~125mph. I'm also pretty sure that you loose more power through a turbo tranny than the 4L60E.

Get your 4L60E built and get your pcm tuned to better manage your tranny. If you're like the above guys(freeway driving), chances are you will not like the turbo trannys. I have a th350 and I like it for "VERY" short driving..but hate getting on the freeway.

P.S. I'm an hours drive away (in a A4 car) from the track.

I run my RMVB Th400 on the street quite a bit now that I have it together, including cruising on the freeway. Not too bad, really, and with the loose converter and 3.23 gears, I'm running about 3500 RPM at 75-80 mph. Kinda neat running the cruise control with the loose stall, when you hit 'resume', it comes up on the converter, and really gets moving. Do it, you won't regret it, and the swap really isn't that hard.

I went through a long decision making process on this when I lost a clutch pack. It involved asking people in my local club, asking people on tech, PM'ing FLP, calling madman (brian) and finally calling Larry at Ls1 speed.

I ended up with a Maximum Evil 4L60E, which is the third (highest) stage offered by Dr Evil. LS1 speed happens to carry them. It was $2k plus ~$130 to upgrade to vacuum modulation.

For a strong 4L60E check into Rossler, Rock-On, FLP and Dr Evil. Probably in that order. (give or take) From what I've seen they are all quality.

I wanted to go TH400 but the loss of overdrive and lockup, taller first gear and the fact that it wasn't going to be cheap by the time it was all said and done had be going with the 60E. It's holding up fine for now (few thousand aggresive street miles and a couple days at the track) but I still wonder if I'd be better off with something bulletproof. Oh well, not on a daily driver. Later on down the road if/when this tranny gives me problems and my car is as much a racer as a street car I might get a turbo 400.

what do you think of the Maximum Evil 4L60E? That's what I was planning on going with when my 2nd 4L60E goes out.

I swapped to a TH 350 and wouldnt look back, my car is more set up for the track so i want to concerned about it as a daily driver, but i was supprised that it wasnt bad on the street, my TH 350 cam with a pretty solid warranty, the 4l60 e just wasnt made to handle 500 HP and i couldnt see putting that kind of money out and not having it backed up. I also like the ratchet shifter and my car is so much easier to tune (it thinks it has a M6). The best i can say is do your research and get what works for your needs.. Good Luck
