Default Please post all info on 4L70 and 4L80 trannies

I've pretty much decided to put in a th400 but if a 4L70/80 will hold about 550rwhp, I may go with one of them. How much do each of these weigh compared to stock and compared to a th400. I know the 4L80 is rather big but can it be made to fit and what is needed to do so. Also, exactly how do these trannies work? Fully automatic? manual? etc. Just post any information you can give me to help me decide. Thanks.

A 4L80-E is basicly the same thing as a Th-400 only it has overdrive, and is electronicly controled. It will hold 500hp well, but it's expensive, and needs to use Yanks PCM trickers, and needs an independant computer. It's also very heavy. It will fit too, with an adapter plate.
The 4L70 is Yanks name for there built up TH200-4R. they will also hold 550 hp, in fact they can be built to handle nearly 1000hp, they are lighter, and cheaper than the 4L80, and don't require an independant computer. They do still need a TV (throttle Valve) cable, so a little modification will need to be done to the throttle body wheel, but nothing really hard. You also still need a PCM tricker box, and a bellhousing adapter, but it's probably going to be alot easier than the 4L80.
They will both work with your stock speedometer, since the Yank 4L70 comes with a VSS when you ask for one built for the LS1, and the 4L80 already has a GM VSS instaled.

Thanks guys. Can you give me some approximate weights of the trannies. And also weights of a th400 and a t56 so I can get an idea of how much more or less the car will weigh.

I have a 4L70 and love it. The manual valve body makes it so easy. You do not have to worry about shift points or any of the PCM mess. The tranny is hard to beat unless you can live with only a 3 speed.

By the way, I am trying to trade my 4L70 for somebodys M6. (texas only)
