Problem w/ reverse: A4/SY3500/Tranny rebuild
OK A4 w/ converter gurus:
Had the tranny rebuilt with mild shift kit and a few beefier parts, then installed SY3500. Car runs and feels great, my only problem is in reverse. Seems to have a "hitch" (or bucking) in it that transmits all the way to the rear when backing out of garage. Always more prominent when cold. I am hoping its just the stall of the converter, since reverse is such a low speed evolution. Any ideas on this one?

Doubt it is the converter. The converter doesn't change its rotation in reverse, so if you don't have the same problem in first gear, I would look at the tranny rebuild or possibly the tranny wasn't installed right.
But first, check the fluid <img src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" border="0">

Ragtop 99, Thanks for the input. The fluid is good and the tranny install is correct (did it ourselves). Now the rebuild, thats another story!! I dont feel like pulling that thing out again either. Oh well.

Sounds like a problem with the low/reverse clutch assy or piston. Take it back to the rebuilder. <img src="gr_sad.gif" border="0">
It was a problem with the rebuild. Dropped the pan and 2 good sized pieces of aluminum were in the pan. This is only with 12 passes and 1000 miles. Now I gotta decide which aftermarket tranny to go with.

Hi Chris <img src="gr_stretch.gif" border="0">
Sorry to hear about your tranny <img src="gr_sad.gif" border="0">
I’d look into either the new trans from Speed Inc, or an FLP unit. You could look into Yank’s trannies too. I’m getting a Speed Inc unit next month.

I did some searches and made some phone calls to help make my decision on which one to go with. I ended up ordering the Pro Yank. It's overkill for my current set up but come late summer when I start adding more mods, I'll be glad I did it.
Take care brother. Good luck with your new tranny!

The car will be out and about again very soon if we keep having these 40+ degree days here <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0">
