Default Is it bad to shift an A4 from Overdrive to Drive to slow down?

Sometimes, when going down a hill at 65 or less I'll just go from Overdrive to Drive and the car slows enough to shift back into OD. Does this put any strain on the engine or tranny?

I wouldn't do it, put it that way. Brakes are much cheaper than tranny rebuilds.

...Oh I forgot...do you think I messed anything up? I've been doing it ever since I had the tranny and diff. fluids changed about six months ago.

Here's a little more info. that may help...
1998 Z28, A4, bought used with 19,700 miles seven months ago. 2.73 gears, only mods are KN Filtercharger, Flowmaster Exhaust.
Had the rear diff. and tranny fluid changed just a few months ago, and car works great absolutely no probs whatsoever.

the manual says it is ok to make that shift under 55. I personally never did it, and don't sugest it.

thanks PontPwr99....do you or anyone else out there recommend I replace the fluids again? maybe not the rear diff. since I had that done six mos. ago but just the tranny fluid? I checked it last night and it's pink and has an almost sour smell. not burnt though.

I think if you are worried that something is wrong then I would get it checked, if not just keep doing regular maint. on your car.

thanks Gary, Bob. Yeah, she seems fine so I'll just give this question a rest and just rely on the 'ole brakes from now on! I usually downshifted below 55mph anyway so I'm not too worried <img src="gr_emb.gif" border="0">

No biggie but it IS a little extra wear and tear on the friction materials in the tranny. I'd rather let the brakes do the job they were designed to do.

I do it all the time, even go from 3-2. Of course I never shift in to 1st. Just drained all the fluid and dropped the pan. No clutch material in the pan and transmission has 26000 miles on it, still original fluid. Transmission works fine, no slipping. Fluid was still clean. Car is stock, I always engine brake going down a hill, you would were out the brakes very quick if you did not. Just my opinion.
