tranny shop wants to install a " high energy" band instead of a kevlar band (which i just broke) is there a difference? will a high energy hold up to the power.. the tranny has a b&m shift kit and a yank 3600.

 

You've gotta ask yourself this...what does a kevlar band do that the hi-energy band doesn't? Therein lies your answer. Remember this... because it says "kevlar" doesn't mean it adds any stopping power to the band. Doesn't the hi-energy have Kevlar in it?

If it has a B&M shift kit its going to be no monster anyhow. I wouldn't put it behind something with big power either band will be fine under 500hp.

 

yeah he might be right...i get the two confused (kevlar/carbon fiber). Both (kevlar/carbon fiber) have resistance to heat, both are insulators (resist burning) if the band is being stopped fast enought you don't have a burning problem. Of coarse I'm talking about reasonable hp/tq situations. Run kevlar in an all out hp/tq situation. Sometimes what best isn't always whats best ..is all I'm saying,I personally don't like Kevlar in a street /strip set up... too many complaints over the years with kevlar...I like the hi-energy band we run alot of them. seems to work great..hope this helps Dave

 

well thanks for the info/opinions, im not too well informed on the the whole transmission deal. its a burg warner high energy band..
its going in a 326/336 street car (with a visit to the track a couple times a year)

 

talked with my transmission supplier. he was telling me the kevlar is a relined band. sometimes doesn't lie flat around the drum. thus, doesn't make full contact on some areas of the band. so, he sold me the high energy band. we'll how well it lasts in the wife's trans.

i've taken out kevlar bands in my 00 formula twice now. working on #3.

 

I have used the Borg Warner Hi-Energy 2-4 band in all of my perfromance buildups for about 10 years now, and have only broken one, & that was using the billet 2nd gear servo. It went apx. 450 passes, replaced it & it is still going with over 650 passes on it, this is a drag race only 4L60E. I do not see using a BW Hi-E is going to be a wrong choice here. Kevlar has had too many problems (too numerous to mention) over the years, & I stopped using them back in 1996.

 

well thats cool, thanks for the info... also they put a shift kit in that replaces the pwm making the tq go directly into lock-up (instead of pressure builting to lock it up) is the any benefits in doing this?

 

Yes, it reduces slippage on the TC clutch, thereby prolonging its life.
