im plan on going with a th400 also. ive been through 4 4l60e transmissions now so the 40 should handle anything i throw at it. i wont be driving it that much plus i use to drive mine around town in 3rd so i dont think not having OD will be a problem
Turbo 400
Simply cannot trust a 4L60E.
Whenever my current 60E bites the dust I will be replacing it with a Turbo 400. Only hope this one lasts long enough that the Z is no longer my daily driver, and I can actually afford the new tranny without having to park it for awhile.

I think the reason most people get caught up is that they want a sports car and a econobox at the same time. A Camaro is a sports car. Therefore go all out or get a 4 cylinder. With a v8 you are using more fuel all the time so just get a different car if you are concerned about fuel savings.
totally agree with above. Now i have another question... There will be no difference in top speed when swapping from 60-e to th400 correct? Or will there be? I dont mind no OD as i drive around in 3 all the time anyway. So does top speed change at all and do they make lock up converters for the th-400 just like a 60-e stall?

nothing like driving down the highway at 3500rpm at 60mph with people tailgating you to go faster , speed up now your cruising at 80mph turning 4300rpm . Say you want to drive 100miles in your car . that ***** a bear to deal with and gets old quick
drive for a week in Drive {4thgear in a t56} and thats what it will be like
+ 1 4l60e

Personally, if you can sit in these cars that long for the highway to be a concern then you are more a man than me. The seats are ok but by the time you get a couple 100 miles out your back starts to hurt!
Sorry to double post. I ran this through a calculator
Rev of 6000, 2.73 gear, 3rd gear, 27 inch tire -->176 mph
If I go to a 3.42 rear gear i can still go 140
My 2 cents is that you aren't going to be running hard long enough on the street to max out the car unless you got 4.11's and you would stil have to get it up to 113 mph.
Oh it would be worth the thrill!

Wanting to not get horrendous gas mileage is not the same as wanting an "econobox". Even with modified muscle cars gas mileage for some people, especially those who use them as a daily driver, is still a concern.
Right now I get 11-12 mpg around town. That means I use almost $6 in gas going to and from class every day. If I had known how much gas would cost now and how much my modifications would hurt my gas mileage I would have modified my car differently. As it is I am hoping to hurry up and graduate so I can buy an econobox to drive daily, given our ridiculous gas prices.

Go through the ET time slip database. If you look through all the 10 second and faster cars, you'll notice (as far as automatics go) there are ALOT more TH400s and powerglides than anything else. That should speak volumes. Very few built 350s, very few built 4L60Es running 9s.
If I had a 11 sec or 12 second daily driver, I'd go w/ a built 4L60E. If I was wanting to go any faster, TH400 or glide and just forget about having overdrive.

One other major advantage the the 4L60E has is that you can get a lock-up converter with one. Better dyno numbers and better gas mileage FWIW. I don't think you can get a lock-up f/ a 400. At least without costing an arm and two legs
I chose the TH400 btw. It really doesn't weight that much. I picked it up with no problem (and I have a bad back). Felt like it weighed about 140 lbs.

Go with a built 4L60E. Personaly I would never run a TH400 unless it was a strip car or something I drove only a few times a month with no highway driving. If you are really worried about not having OD and wanting something reliable get a built 4L80E IMO. Though I seen no problems with a correctly built 4L60E.

Can't wait, tired of rowin the gears, one broken clutch changed my mind as did driving my fiances T/A with a TH400.

Ditto.......TH400 + Gear Vendor = Built 4L80E. I think they are about even, but I like how when I downshift my TH400, it doesn't buck the car. It is so much fun too. It can hold 1200+ HP, so no worry on braking it soon.
