going to a 4l80e

going to a 4l80e
Dave at Rock On gave me an ETA of February on my 4l80e. I am going to work with BMR on a new type crossmember/torque arm setup and try to cut down on some of the swap expense. Hopefully we can get everything together where the swap is not such a PITA as far as knowing what needs to be done. I'll keep you guys posted on the progress.

The transmissions are about the same length, but the transmission mount is about 6 1/2"further back on the 4L80E and the mount is about 1 1/2" higher. You also need extra clearance for the bigger pan.

Well, if you can wait this oughta be interesting. I will run my normal 730ish hp to it and then shoot another 100-150 shot on top of that via n20 to make sure it holds. Should not be a problem. No reason to lose o/d if you dont have to. TwinTrboCE and Parish are already running huge power thru one so that is not an issue. We just want to try to simplify the swap and make it as painless/cheap as possible.

Yank has one but I want a better one. If you look at the turbo 400 crossmembers to compare, you will see the BMR lets you adjust the height of the front torque arm mount to change instant center. i do not believe yanks has this. Just going to try a few different things

We had an adjustments on our old design and in testing we have found the location that works best with the F-body automatic transmission and M-6 you do not have much room to go up as the T/A hits the floor pan and when you go lower you hit the exhaust so most of the adjustment is not useable.
In testing we have found that a stiff and well supported crossmember will do more to plant the tires than a few extra holes of adjustment.
our new 4L80-E with T/A mount will be out in mid Jan.
also all crossmembers are on sale 10%off at this time

Good news to hear on your newer torque arm. For my car, in this ONE application, I like the BMR crossmember having the torque arm mount being adjustable. It doesnt hit either and the instant center change is definitely noticeable. My auto car has a hard time hitting the tires hard enuff but moving the front of the torque arm down definitely changed that No offense meant

Nice.
You can only angle the transmission so much, they are designed to be used at a certain angle otherwise you can run into lubrication issues if it's too angled.
Is that Mike or Dave posting from Yank? Hello!
I could be in the market for a swap like that, what is the difference in weight?

My silly question: can the 4L80 be controlled by the standard LS1 computer?

Hey thanks!
The 4L80E can be controlled by a standard LS1 computer, however you will have to have the wiring harness altered and it will need reprogrammed for the new computer. Speartech can help you out with that for about $200.

When installed, the 4L80-E pan rails should be level. The bottom of the stock pan itself is not flat, but if using a shallow cast aftermarket pan that can be used to level also since it will probably have a flat bottom. If it will fit, the best thing to do would be to shim it to exactly the same angle as the 4L60-E, that way the angle relationship between the output shaft and the pinion do not change and cause new driveline vibrations.
