Default A4 slipping issues

I noticed it doing this (to a much lesser degree) recently, but I just got back from a trip to Orlando (about 2hrs highway driving each way) and all along the way the car would "slip" pretty bad in 4th and somewhat in 3rd. When I would give it gas it in 4th it would free rev until I let off. If I gave it throttle VERY lightly it would accelerate, but would still be about 1k rpms above what it should be. It also seemed like the TC didn't want to lock up...I would have to let off the throttle and ease on it very gently to get it do lock up, then when I gave it any throttle at all it would "unlock" and I would end up cruising about 400-500 rpms above what I should have been. On the way back I ended up having to pull it into third to accelerate at all (third seemed to slip just a bit on moderate throttle but not nearly as bad as fourth) and then pop it back into fourth to cruise. Oddly enough when I did this, I noticed the tranny temp went down from about 150* to about 125*...I guess all that slipping was creating excess heat.

First and second feel fine to me, the car has seemed to be a bit of a dog lately, but I figured that was because of the fubar'd cat on the drivers side that I will soon be gutting...and the weather being kinda screwy down here (frikin' 80* the other day )

Car is stock motor with bolt ons and a dry nitrous shot that I haven't hit in quite some time. Tranny is bone stock with a hayden tranny cooler and an autometer tranny temp gauge with the sender in the pressure port on the side of the tranny. Rear is stock with 2.73 gears

What the hell is going on?? As always any help is greatly appreciated.

Kinda what I was afraid of. Damn, I wish it was just the converter though. Guess I'll take it to the local tranny shop and let them drive it to see what they say.

Be sure you have proper tranny fluid level. I had
some episodes like this when I had a torn pan
gasket and was losing juice steadily.

Likely the 3-4 clutch pack. Exact same thing happened to me.
