What can I do to a 4l60E to make it stronger now?
Mine has 100k miles on it, and I am planning on runnings all bolt ons with a 4000 stall. It seems to shift fine right now, though I think the fluid is dirty. What all can I do to it to prolong the life of it (besides not race )
Also, I am thinking about putting a little spray on later - any ideas?

You will blowup that trans in about 10-20 runs down the 1/4 mile with a 4000 stall convertor. If you are running this on the street, stick to 2000-2800 stall. You will still blow it up soon enough. I run a 2000 stall and it works great with a CAI and complete exhaust system (Headers, high flow cat and Catback). Et's at 12.85@108mph.

I wouldn't expect a 100k 4L60e to last a long time at the track...
You'll definitely want to add a tranny cooler. Even though it's not going to help the strength of the transmission, it definitely will prolong the life.
I would just go ahead and save for some good bands and clutches, and have it built right when it goes out. That's what I did.
And a 4000 is great... do you know what str you're going with?

Go with at least a 3200 stall for the street, you will NOT regret it.
BTW, a freind of mine followed the advice above given to him by APE. He put a 2800 1.6str stall in his '02 SS. Both of us had all the bolt-ons except I was still running a stock stall. He beat me by a front fender 3 different times. Two rolls and one dig. After my 3600 stall, I wiped my *** with him by about 5 cars from a dig.

i have three questions.
1 what is an str?
2 what would be a good ($)guesstimate on rebuilding an 4l60e for the street using upgraded bands & clutches etc etc without a tc?
3 can the oem tc be restalled to 32-3600 rpm? the reason i ask is that this will be my daily transportation and will never see the track, im just looking for some extra street performance.

2) i just paid 2300 for my tranni build.
3) and i dont think the stock tc can be restalled that high. go with a 3200 vig and you will love it, i have on on my DD and i love it. i put about 38,000 miles on my car in the last 2 years (7,000 since i had the converter put in) and i love it.

1) STR stands for Stall Torque Ratio. Basically, it's the ratio by which torque is multiplied from the crank to the trans. The higher the str, the bigger kick you feel off the line because of the multiplied torque. However, the effect of higher str wears off much quicker and less efficient on the top end. Good STR for street tires, I'd say 2.1.
2) Had my Rock-On trans built for 1965 shipped
3) Nope. For a street driven daily driver, I'd recommend no less than a 3400 stall 2.2 str. You'll love it. The higher str will make it feel nice and tight around town. You'll want some drag radials to put the power down though.

couldn't have said it better myself.
i have a vig3200 (which flashes around 3800). it's great for the street.
i paid 2K for my stage III trans from speed inc (dr evil brand). my stock trans went at 55k miles. i had the converter on there since 32K miles along with a shift kit, tranny cooler. had the cam put in at 40k miles. a ton of track and street passes. trans lasted for a while, i never did more than 2 back to back runs. would always take a minimum 20-30 minute break in between to make it last. finally started slipping on a day when i got a little too confident and did 4 passes in a row.
