1-2 shift banging limiter... help diagnosing?
Hi Everyone,
I'm running a 220 cam w/ boltons (98TA), and recently my 1-2 has begun banging the rev limiter at WOT, for just a few cycles, (less than 1 second), before it shifts (but it does shift, and once it hits 2nd, it's fine, no "slipping" once it engages, just about 3 or 4 bumps against the rev limiter). I've heard some people say it may be a torque converter problem, as opposed to the trans? I generally hear about the 3-4 band going out on the 4L60E, is it common to have the 1-2 shift start going south? I've been driving carefully/slowly since it started happening, so I haven't done any diagnostic runs.
The car also has a Yank 3000, which is several years old. I have noticed, when the converter is locking or unlocking, it sometimes gives a slight vibration (moreso than usual), just a few wobbles can be felt.
I have EFILive so I can run some logs. Is there anything I should do to further diagnose the problem? Or is it most certainly the 4L60E on the way out? Any info would be a GREAT help. Thanks everybody.

every once in a while mine will do it if it really breaks traction on the 1-2 shift...like if its really cold out, doent matter if the tires are warm or not, if the tires spin on the 1-2 shift it will hit the limiter on my car, but only hits once or twice then pushes into second...

I'm thinking both the slower shifting, and the TC chatter, might
both point to reduced line pressure. First off I would start with
a fluid level check, maybe just go ahead and give it a filter & fluid
change just to show you care. Have a look and verify that fluid
temps are sane, especially higher temps seemed to weaken the
TCC holding power / increase slip & chatter back when I was
using the stock profile. Verify that you have no MAF related
issues which might produce less of a "load" computed value and
pull line pressure under some conditions (though you'd think that
at WOT it would be all in; read the force motor current in EFILive
and look for 50-90mA actual at WOT, if you see more then that
may be your pony).

Does it matter if its in Drive or OD? Afew years back I had a issue at the track hitting the limiter in D only. Being a 98 I would try also to lower your MPH shift point alittle to see if that helps.

One other question, I remember some debate a while back about synthetic auto trans fluid vs organic, but I can't seem to pull up anything that old on the search. What's the latest concensus on this? Is synthetic "too slippery" for the 4L60E?
spy2520: Yep, I know what you're talking about there, mine (and I think everyone's) would sometimes hit the limiter if you really lit them up, since the beginning, but it's definitely more severe now, and it will do it even with heated up 315 drag radials, where I can feel it's not spinning. =( So it's definitely some sort of new problem.

i have the same issue with mine after a cam install, it could be tourque management, or the trans going out, and you do have a stall so that should help a bit but my problem is in the 2-3 area
