The feedback that I've gotten from 'built' 4L60E owners is that even they have limits and can fail. TH400s are virtually indestructable.

if you know anyone who drove back in the 60's and 70's they will swear by these tranny's. my friends father told me so many stories about trying to kill the 400 but couldnt do it and it is in his yard still getting ready to go into his daughter's monte carlo.

Also my car is probably about 700 lbs lighter than yours. it weighs around 2750 lbs without me in it. stock weight is around 3450 lbs. it doesn't take much power to keep my tin can rollin.

i put it in october 21st 2005. It has seen about 3000 miles since then and i have been to the track twice. Abuse...hmm...i am on a stock rear so that oughta tell ya something
Got the stall from Precision at the same time but they are going to go thru it and restall it to whatever the buyer wants as its setup for a turbo car now. I have it at 2800rpms now. It is a longshaft 400 so you will need to have a driveshaft shortened.

I'm going to a th400 myself.. I just have a few parts left to get. hughes th400, rmvb, transbrake, and a good sized converter, around 4500.
it's not a cheap swap to make, but if you are making good power, or like to run your car hard, race it alot, etc.etc. it's a wise investment. I know that at 65, I'll be spinning aorund 3500 rpm with the 4.10's and stock sized tires, but I plan to swap in 3.73's and I will be on my 28 inch e.t. radial about 1/2 the time, so it's not a huge deal to me. I only put about 2000 miles a year on my car, so the fuel costs for the year for the car are pretty low anyway... but I'm expecting about 10 mpg around town, maybe 15 on the highway. Which will only get worse.. as the years, and hp is added

man, guys, i drive almost 500 miles a week!!!
I do have another car now but i would like to take the car on trips to orlando or brandenton, even michigan soon, and i dont want to stop every 200 miles for a fill up!!!
I have right now a 3.23 rear. How much can a lockup converter for the th400 drop the rpms. I usually drive on the highway around 70-90, give or take a few!!
Im either between a 4l80e or a th400....man, decisions, decisions!!

If you leave the 3.23, and go with a lockup converter, you will probably still be o.k. I'd think twice about trips to michigan, but from miami to daytona would probably still be o.k.
Another thing you could do is pick up a set of 16 inch factory wheels, and put some 28 inch radials on there.. that would drop the gearing closer to 2.73, somethign else you may want to consider... or if you roll around on soemthing like welds all the time, just get a 2nd set ofr the back, and put 28's on that.. I know a couple people that do that.
Personally, I'll most likly be swapping in 3.73's and be on a 28 inch drag radial 99% of the time, and a trip of about 85 miles one way is about as far as I see myself ever taking my car.. so I am in a little differnet situation.

well...
how about a th400, lockup converter, gear vendor, and maybe a manual valve body? It would just be in reliability, cost, um..cost, and comfort.
I like a smooth ride an i knoiw both can be made smooth. however, i would like to know which one of the two will last longer without a freshen up?
I have noticed that most ppl with a 3spd trans also have a higher gear ration like a 3.73 or a 4.10. My question is are the gears so long in a th400 that you need a higher rear gear to keep the motor in the powerband?
What kind of top end is expected with a th400 and a 3.23 or even a 3.73? I would like to reach higher speeds than 150 and still pull hard. Got a friend with a dirty h/c, direct shot firehawk and he see's alot of high speed runs...need to shut him up a bit with a bit of friendly and safe *** stomping!

4L80E is the better choice, your 385/385 won't even wake the tranny up when you drive it.
If you go TH400 you have to shift the gears yourself, up and down. Also, the shifting is backwards. To accelerate forward you will be pulling stick backwards into each gear, and than pushing it forward to slow down, wierd. Plus, no over-drive. To add a gear vendors is friggin EXPENSIVE and HEAVY and your 385/385 will be NO MORE.
4L80E is a TH400, with computer controls that work with your current PCM, normal shifting up and down, or you can just put it in "3" or "D" and drive around and let the tranny shift automatically just like a factory 4L60E does.
You will never break it, and it could possibly outlast your engine. There like $3,000.

yeah, just went through a fw sites an dnoticed that the gears in a th400 and a 4l80e are exactly the same for the exception of the .75 O/D in the 4l80e.
Do the 4l80e, with its o/d gear, have the same issues that a 4l60e has? Meaning, it is recommended that you dont wot shift into 4th/O/D becuz it wil cu alot of damage to the clutch assembly. Is this true.
I have a conv. and it weighs about a hundred or som pounds heavier than a t-top camaro. I guess its like a trans am hardtop/t-top.
So, for a 4l80 swap, is the casing the same of similar to a 4l60e? Internals? So a swap to a 4l80 is the trans, and a tune to match the new gears?
and they are 3k for a bullet proof 4l80e?

Im the one that has 385/385 now..but should be over 400 with a better tune. I dont want gear vedors..way way to much money. The 4l80e is a heavy tranny and would almost slow me down, plus ive heard its a bitch to swap in. The th400 would be the easiest with a lockup converter and my 3.42 gears...that shouldnt be too bad
