Default 6l80e available for our fbodies?

Does anyone know if the 6l80e in the 06 vette is or will be available to use in our fbodies? And if so what is the power capability,for instance, is it as strong as the 4l80e? Would a 4400 stall work with that 6 speed auto?

4L80e's can be found in HD trucks.... 3/4 ton, and 1 ton trucks...

4 = 4 Forward Gears
L = Longitudinal Mounting
80 = Series of transmission (60 is a moderate duty, there for the 80 is HD hince why
it's found in HD applications)
E = Electronically Controlled

Interesting break down of the nomenclature, however I thought the 80 (or 60, 65) portion was relative to the input torque rated? Hence 4L80E was 4 speed, Long. mount, 800ft lbs torque, Electronic? With the intro of the 4L65E which provide a bit more holding power, then again, 5 could be for the 5 planetary gearset used over the conventional 4?

According to GM, the torque rating has nothing to do with anything. It is just a reference number indicating that it can hold more power. The 60 series can hold about 400-450, the 65 can hold 450, the 70 can hold a tad more, and the 80 can hold 500 or so. There is no direct correlation between the series number and torque capacity.

The 4L60e only has 2 planetary sets, with 3 pinion gears or "carrier" gears....

L is for Longitudinal, where as FWD have a T for Transversly mounted

the 60 is just the series of it, it has nothin to do with actual TQ holding capacity...If it were that would then people with strokers wouldn't be ripping them out for a 350/400 setup...They would just go with a perf. build 4L80e....Cuz not too many streety cars, or cars on this site are making 800 lb/ft of tq.....

The reason why the tranny has 2 sets of planetaries are, because it is cheaper than having one, and having to engineer something to disengage something, and engage another part inside the transmission so having 2 set sof planetaries allows the transmission to have less parts, and be more compact...If you understood how planetaries worked, you would scratch your head at first as to why it's a 4spd, because out of one planetary gearset in the 4L60e you can get 5 forward gears, and 2 reverse gears out of it...confusing but if your in an ASE Tech Certification program, it is easier...

4L60-E planetary carriers each have 4 pinions.
4L65-E planetary carriers each have 5 pinions.

6L80-E will require the TCM to go with it.
6L80-E has same bolt pattern so will bolt up to LS1/LS6.

No, not necessarily....All we have done for the past 2 weeks is tear down 4L60e's, not one of them have had 4 pinion gears, all the one's I've done so far have been 3....You can buy aftermarket planetaries that have more gears for strength...Not sayin there might not be, but Factory GM Teardown manuals state there are 3 pinions...

Are you sure (any pictures...?)...?
They're supposed to have 4 pinions per planetary gearset.
My GM Unit Repair Manual shows 4 pinions.
My Hydramatic 4L60E Technician Guide shows 4 pinions.

The 4L80e is a waste....you can build a 4L60e to handed anything that the car will throw at it, and have the holding capacity of the 80 series, and still have money in your pocket when it's said and done...Plus no where near the roatational mass of the 80 series either, a 4L80e can be picked up for $2500-$3000 probably...this is coming from me, as well as an ASE Master Certified Tech who is a Master GM Tech as well....The 4L80e is the heaviest 4spd trans there is, and their 4T80e transaxle IS THE HEAVIEST hands down, only found in Lac's with the V8 FWD, and the Old's Aurora....
Anyone who's been in the 4L60e knows the weak area's the Reaction Sunshell, and the sprags are the weak points, both of which have aftermarket counter parts avail....then if you want you can get beefire planetaries as well...

As for the planetaries I will see what I Can come up with, I am doin Transaxles now, THEY HAVE 4 pinion gears lol 3T40 yay!!!

I agree, a stock 4L80E is quite expensive and you can build a (or buy an already built) stong 4L60E for less money;

and the 4L60E lighter weight is good too as is the steep first gear ratio.

LoL... yeah, I was surprised to find 4 pinion planetaries in my old car's 3T40/125C.

Cheers
Joe
