Drill into tranny plan to get accurate temp reading?

Drill into tranny plan to get accurate temp reading? I am planning on installing a tranny temp gauge and was wondering if i had to drill into the pan to get an accurate reading? Would the sender have to be welded? If not, could the sender be placed on the tranny fill hole plug? Does not seem that it would be accurate there, but never know. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

Re: Drill into tranny plan to get accurate temp reading? My temp gauge is in the pan thru a second drain plug. I wonder where the sendor for autotap is... autotap seems to read 25* higher than my gauge.
I`ve been wanting to double check the fluid temp in the pan to make sure it my gauge reads correct ...

Re: Drill into tranny plan to get accurate temp reading? I have mine installed in the pan through a drain plug adapter as well. The factory sensor is no doubt located after the fluid has passed through the pump and valve body, probably near the exit to the radiator.

Re: Drill into tranny plan to get accurate temp reading? Yep, mine's in a drain plug fitting too. Works great, always reads 10 to 15 degrees less then Autotap. That sounds about right. You can't weld or braze the fitting on. Been there, done that, the pan is made out of some sort of weird alloy. The drain kits are less than $10 and simple to install.

Re: Drill into tranny plan to get accurate temp reading? I bought my drain plug kit from Autozone. But be careful putting it in and messing with it. Mine worked great until I had to drain the trans fluid the first time, then it leaked until I bought a new 2k Silverado pan from GM. If you are goin to put the drain plug in your stock pan I can send you some pics via email of where I put mine so that it didn't interfere with the internals of the trans.
