Default Someone please help me understand what a stall is

"search" hasnt helped me any, since it just finds a bunch of threads asking if theyre a good idea, and I couldnt find anything in the FAQs

I see a stall mentioned very often, but I have no clue what one of them is. (NEWB). Can someone tell me what it is and how it works?

I checked out that howstuffworks link earlier. But it doesnt really detail what a different stall will do. like, a 3200 or a 4000 stall.... How does it benefit the car

*EDIT* I just checked the fuddle racing website, and it is a bit clearer to me.

But, doesn't launching at higher RPMs hurt the engine in the long run?

it essentially makes the RPMs just jump or "flash" to a certain amount. A 3000 stall will instantly flash up to 3000 rpms when you nail it. It pretty much gets rid of your dead spots. before you get a stall 30mph is the worst roll-on ever for 3.23 A4s, but after the stall it's awesome. Most people get one because it helps your take off incredibly if you can manage traction.

Everyone says that but my dead spot starts at 35. At 30 I can still nail it and chirp the tires quite nicely when it downshifts.

The dead spot is when you nail it and it downshifts to the bottom of 2nd gear usually around 40 mph depending on your gears.With a stall your rpms don't drop quite so far and pretty much eliminates this problem
