Default trans temp high, and shift error reported

I went out to take another test drive on the transmission now that its 90 degrees outside to see if it would make a difference, and I found some startling things...

First the transmission ran about about around 175-185 on the highway, and eventually got up to a high of after i parked the car but left it running. Also it reported on hptuners that it was having a shift error of about .5seconds, but the shifts felt firm

This is hotter than a stock transmission will normally run isnt it? Or am i over reacting? I am looking into getting a cooler, so hopefully that will help, but i am wondering if there is something wrong with the cooler i have now... Would adding some fluid help? I checked it and the fluid seemed to be in the right range, and the fluid is brand new.... any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated!

I'm no professional on trannys by any means. But I think as long as you keep it under 200 you are fine. Mine usually stays under 180.

if the temp isn't a life or death problem, is that shift error being reported a problem as well?

The shift error is the difference in time between the desired shift time and the actual shift time.

If you see 0.5s shift time error during an upshift with throttle applied, then that is marginal ok, not the best; it should be okay unless you can feel the shifts being slow and sloppy; how do your shifts feel when you have 30+% throttle...?

If you see 0.5s on a shift after you let off the throttle, that is fine no problem.

I think you don't have to worry.

Do you have a picture of a log chart that you can post (host it someplace like imageshack and post it here as a hosted image)...?

Using your HPT you can set the Desired Shift Times for 1-2, 2-3 and 3-4 to values like 0.3s, and increase the shift pressures 10%;

this will make the shifts feel quicker and a little firmer, and will reduce wear from ramp out/ramp in of apply devices during a shift, and is not harsh enough to damage any hard parts.

You're stock and don't have a stall, 185F is fine, no problem for the street.

If you do engine mods or get a stall, or if you drag race, then definitely get a cooler.

The shifts still feel very firm, and I have already reduced torque management and adjusted my shifts to make them faster and more firm in the past via the transmission tuning guidelines listed in the pcm/tuning section.

i can email the log file to you if thats alright, it wont let me post it up as an attachment...

I can't view the log, I use the other tuner package.

Try this....

Display the chart on your PC and go SHIFT-PrintScreen,
then open Paint or IrfanView and paste, save to image file (.jpg or .png).

Then goto http://www.imageshack.us/ and upload the saved image file and
copy the direct image link (the last link shown on the page).

Then in here do a reply, go advanced, press the mountain picture button, and paste in your link, submit reply.

For example, like this...

Whatever your shift timing problem is, 192 with the car idling on a 96 degree day (like we had yesterday) is definitely not unusual or a problem.

Rev, i never noticed you were from wichita... when mattsls1 gets his car running again, we all need to go cruising... also, I'd love to see what that 3000 rpm stall feels like! This summer buddy!

The shifts feel good, but i think i will get a tranny cooler regardless to prolong the life of my trans for as long as possible till i can afford a flt stage 3... Thanks guys... Ill post up that log file tomorrow when im not slightly drunk! lol

Yep, I'm around ... PM me if you'd like to roll, drive my car sometime or head to the track. Had a great track day last Saturday but nothing doin' now with it so hot. Be forewarned, though - I'm an OF, lol.
