Default th400 bellhousing difference

I am going to buy an pontiac th400. Is it the same as the chevy bell housing tranny. Since I am going to cut it off and install a jw ultrabell I dont think it matters. As far as I can tell all the measurements and converters are the same. I just wanted a second opinion. thanks

After you cut it back to the pump it's the same as a chevy.

some of the BOP cases use 6 bolt pump and other use 8 bolts so check if the bell will work with the pump that you have

The ultra bell needs clearenced for the top 4 back engine cover bolts, and only uses 5 bolts to fasten it to the engine. Just did mine! Good luck!

You have to cut those two big ears off the top of the ultra bell as well. Besides that and the clearancing for the 4 upper rear main cover bolts, thats all you should have to do. I just installed mine yesterday.

Dan, what was hitting those ears on your car? I just put mine in in final postiion and haven't had to cut those ears off. I certainly hope they aren't going to interfer with my headers or anything along those lines. I've already had this thing in and out like 5 times now, ha, and really don't feel like pulling it out again. Thanks.

Just looked and see what you guys were talking about. However, it did not keep my bell from sealing 100% to the top of the block though. I couldn't fit event a fingernail in and looked everywhere and saw now cracks or spaces, hopefully i'll be ok but will definately look for that next time the trans comes out.

I did it because Rossler told me they needed to be cut off. I butted the th400 ultra bell up to both my T56 and 4l60e and those ears stick up quite a bit (about an inch) past those so I marked them off to be the same as the 4l60e. I didn't fit check it on the motor as I didn't want to put in and pull it out again without using a lift. I noticed the pics that Derty put up of his ultra bell also had the ears cut off. If it fits for you then cool.

I checked it out pretty well. I beveled the top inside edge (between the top two bolt holes in the ultra bell) about 3/16" though before I ever clearanced for the bolts (hoping that was enough but it wasn't) so thats probably why I had no other clearance issues. Right now it fits great.

on another note, I put in another post about the clearance between the TC pads and the flexplate. How much clearance did you guys have?

Dan, in all honesty this is my first experience working with an auto. Could you be a little more clear with your question at the last part of your reply and i'll do my best to answer

Yeah, and if i'd checked it like you did I probably would've done the same thing but just luckily it seemed to work out for me!

No problem. With the torque converter pushed into and seated completly in the transmission, you should have a gap between your flexplate mounting holes and the torque converter mounting pads. This area has a min and max clearance that needs to be set, mine is just slightly bigger than 3/16" so I just shimmed it. It is now somewhere between 1/8 and 3/16". Here is what Rossler says http://www.rosslertrans.com/Converter Spacing.htm and has some good illustrations to show what I'm talking about..

Also, I just checked, and other than the four top rear cover bolts, I would of had no clearance issue at all there. It was like 3/16" away from the cover itself.

Wow, holy crap. I'm glad you said something Dan, like I said this is my first experience with an auto and I didn't know there was a min and max value here (other then the pilot keys being engaged). I'll make sure to check this next weekend when I continue with this project. I did wonder about this but was not 100% posative regarding how to proceed.
