Default which tranny?

for my 402 buildup, there are 3 options i'm considering right now. Please dont' pop in here and say TH400 or something, as i'm not considering it....yet.

1. refresh stage IV rock-on 4L60E

2. rock-on 4L80E

3. built 6L80....still in experimental stage, hopefully make production by the time the motor swap comes along.

what do you guys think? AND PLEASE SAY WHY.

Out of those three, I would go with the 4L80E

i went to a seminar on the 6l80e there is alot that is goign to have to be figured out before a f-body can run one. such things as it has its own internal computer that requires it to interface with two other computers on the car which we dont have, and it requires the use of several sensors we dont have like a throttle pedal postion sensor.

I would go with the 60E and pray hard.
According to HOT ROD magazine (I know.....) it takes 5 to 6 thousand dollars to get a an 80E to stand up to 700 to 800 horsepower.
for a fraction of that you could get a TH400 with a gear vendors OD and it would be bulletproof.

Overdrive and reliability is the point here right?

I wouldn't do any of those unless you're wanting to spend a lot of money to go all-out racing. For a street-n-strip car, I went with the FLP 4L65E .... the level 5. FLP or FLT ... Chuck builds for both and owns the latter. It's about $500 more than the Level 4, but, well worth it.

From what I read, the 80E is not a direct bolt in. It's a bigger trans. so it takes a BFH mod and few other "adjustments".

I'm going to have my 60E upgraded to the 65E (approx. 5 major internal upgrades) when I have it rebuilt ... along with all the other upgrades that are available.

FLP/FLT. If I ever need anything more than a stock trans, I'll be going back to those guys. No one else. Period. They built an amazing trans for my WS6.

Why would you not look at the 4L80e?

Mostly expense and the effort involved in the swap , As for the six speed well if you want a manual they ae cool but I will say rom looking at the manula trans forums they to have there share of problems and I would not say its a fix either just a diffeent avenue of preference.
