Default Why High Stall Converters Rule off the Line! :)

I recently dynoed the following:

Converter locked: 379 @ 6100, 362 TQ @ 4800

Converter unlocked: 365 HP @ 6500, 485 TQ @ 3300 I stayed above 400 ft-lbs through 4600 rpm.

I was able to get a low rpm measurement in the unlocked because I changed my shift points in Edit to keep the car in 3rd gear starting at 40 mph, even at WOT. Had I set it up to go from 20 mph, I estimate that I would have been above 550 ft-lbs around 2500.

The shift in rpm of peak HP is primarily due to the sampling process used by a dyno jet in computation of the rpm/mph factor. The slip in a high stall tends to muck up the rpm/mph factor on a dyno jet and thus skews the curve to thr right (i.e. rpm reads too high).

14 HP loss running unlocked; not too shabby for a 4200 stall <img border="0" alt="[chug]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_chug.gif" />

I love converters as well....but am I reading that right? 380rwhp from a stage2 head/224 XE-R cam'd car...and a forged shortblock at that....WITH LS1_Edit??????? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

Power is down from expected, but with a 1000 miles on it, I assume it will loosen up a bit and go up. A built bottom end generally does not add HP, just reliability. It held 370 HP from 5700 to 6600 so I'm not sure why it didn't peak another 10 - 15 HP higher.

Track times for a 3800 lb car aren't too bad.

The fat converters definitely rule! I think you should re-dyno and hit it lower so we can see 500+ RWTQ. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

what? forged bottoms dont add HP? youre KIDDING! i know joel, im just saying you can rev that car to the limits of the cam or intake. it just seems low thats all. John C's car did dyno 39x at one point but i do know he only dyno's in the 380 range as well. locked? who knows. on slicks? probably, but who knows. Im just saying they look low, no biggie. you would think 370 at x rpm would climb up to something around 6400 and peak. or at least 6200 or so. 9hp in 500rpm is ok i guess. probably leaves for a nice flat HP/Tq curve. and yes the times are good for your boat. i just think IMO they could be better. no bash, just being hopeful.

now back to the original thread.

Ryan,
Raughammers car with MTI S2 heads and same cam dynoed 380-385RWHP. It isnt uncommon for a A4 tranny with converter to see those numbers. I dynoed 385 and went 119mph with 5700rpm shiftpoints.
Cheers,
Chris

A couple hundred pounds lighter would be nice. I almost pulled the A/C system since I rarely use it, but I was glad I had it the other day...83 degrees, 90+% humidity, and occasional rain.

I always laugh at the guys who rip out their AC - the thought is inconceivable to me...

People up North, start there cars & let them idle in the driveway with the heater cranked for a while so it is bearable to get in. Down here in the summer, you need to let your car idle with the AC cranked on full blast for a few minutes before you can touch anything inside the car.

Of course it probably doesn't help that I have black leather interior... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" />

Red:

Normally I love having the top down and will do it even if it is 90 degrees out as long as I'm not wearing a suit, but I don't like being rained upon.

I couldn't pull the A/C if I were back in houston. Too many days you get T-storms at the end of a 90 degree day during your commute home. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

With that tranny, converter, cam-heads-motor combo. Your HP is about where it should be.

Mine is very similar through the muffler.
Right at 400 minus the cat back.

Dude... drop some weight off that tank... your times WILL improve. Or just drive it and enjoy it the way it sits.

11.5 aint too shabby in the heat!

BTW, can you describe for the masses your opinion on how the C2 drives? Is it easy to live with? Idle good? Give us the low down amigo.

Congrats on a beatiful and FAST car!
