my tranny is whinning so its either my converter or pump. im getting a new vig converter anyways becaust my fuddle broke. so im hoping its just the converter whinning. i havent driven my car but about 10-20 miles after it started to whine. should i worry about my pump or do you think it will be alright. my tranny has about 50000 miles on it. it shifts good and the only reason im getting a new verter is because my fuddle quit locking up, so im hoping that is whats making the noise. what should i do, worry about the pump or leave it? thanks

My 4L60E went out on the highway right after I purchased the car in Pittsburgh. The pump went bad and overheated the transmission and litterally boiled the oil out of the fill tube. Didnt notice any whine when it went bad though. I kinda had a feeling that it was going to go because when I would go up a hill the rpms would raise and then drop without shifting gears. Sucks that it broke down outside of D.C though.

To find out where the noise is coming from on your transmission check to see if the noise occurs in all gear ranges. This could be a torque converter or pump; something that operates in all gears. A defective pump will cause humming sounds which will increase with engine RPM and will occur in pretty much any gear range.

well not really...i know its either a verter or pump but what i want to know is if i should do both or will the tranny shop be able to tell if the pump bad or good? thank you for your comments though!

 

Yeah the shop or even you will be able to tell if the pump is good or bad. They just have to check pump clearances.

 

oh ok...cause what im getting at is i dont want to have to put the new converter in and then find out the pump was the problem and have to have the tranny tore out again and have to pay all that money three times...thanks

 

Yeah.. Should be like 5 or 6 bolts holding the pump in and once its out they can check to see if the pump is bad or going bad pretty easily. I would recommend it. Also deffinately replace the front pump seal with the install..

the front pump seal may have already been replaced. my fuddle just went in about 3k miles ago then it broke..do you hvae to change the seal everytime?

 

Well its good practice to replace it, but considering you just had it replaced then probably not.
