Default t400 shifter options??

Hey guys!!

I recently bought a 98 Z28 that has a turbo 400 with reverse VB and the original owner had the stock shifter modded so that it could be used with the 400. It looks great, but I am thinking of going to an aftermarket shifter.

What are you guys using??

Pics would be great!!

Thanks!!

I run the Turbo Action Cheetah Shifter and love it. I have pics of the install, but they're still loaded on the camera. There is a couple threads with shifter pics around.

SShark that looks good. Do you think there is anything that could be made to cover up where you can see down in the console or would that affect the way that the shifter works??

DanZ28 I have searched and found a few pics, but if you have any links I would love to see them b/c I may have missed them. If you get those pics of your shifter uploaded please let me know.

Thanks for the help guys!!!

BTW, the coiled cable is for the T-brake and the little box looking thing in the back of the shifter is my wide band guage.

I used the stock A4 shifter console (came out way cleaner than the M6 console I tried first) and cut a dam near perfect shape to fit around the shifter, it looks really clean, no holes or gaps. I also kept my ashtray and cup holder .

Nice Dan!!!

That has to be one of the cleanest installs I have seen. How hard was it to trim the console to get it to fit???

Looks right at home in there!!!

Any installation pics? If not, could you remove the upper center console and show some mounting pictures?

Thanks

Thanks Chris.

It was actually kind of easy, took me about an hour to cut it then test fit, trim some more, etc. I was actually surprised it turned out so well but I did spend a fair amount of time mounting the shifter properly as well.

Thanks for the install pics. Are they threaded bungs welded? Nice idea. Places the shifter at the perfect height while not too far forward to interfere with the HVAC controls.

Any other things needed that were tricky/etc during the install?

Thanks

That is hollow tubing I used and cut to fit. I did tack weld some nuts underneath the plates though so all I had to do was screw the bolt in and not worry about holding the nuts in place.

Nothing to tricky about the install other than finding a good place to run the cable out. I had to do a little cutting on the bigger section of the lower center console to fit around the shifter and cable. You can't see any of it but it had to be done in order for me to move the shifter back that far. The A4 console, as far as cutting the hole, I basically started out by measuring the base of the shiter then i used masking tape to mark the hole I wanted and got it close, then trimmed from there using my right angle air grinder/cutter with a sanding pad on it. I cut the hole in the console where I wanted it first, then I placed and mounted the shifter to fit the console correctly, worked perfect.

Nice. Thanks for the reply. I am going to swap in a TH400 at some point. I'm doing a lot of research now before I "bite the bullet" and begin modding.

I've never operated a cheetah scs shifter. How does the 1-2-3 shift action work?

Has anyone put a leather/rubber shift boot over their th400 shifters? I have a Hurst Quarter stick and wondering how it would look with a shift boot covering the opening of the console.
