Help me pick a Converter!
Dustin i want to no what your smoking ,u would have to be on something to get 9tenth AND 7 MPH IN THE 1/8 MILE .Im sorry but i think that is total BS.Are u sure your not running NOS or did u forget that you were sniffing it that day. Peace and love dude. By the way i own a 2000 trans am sso i no what they can run. DUDE

lol.......believe it or not don't really matter to me. But there are at least 5 - 6 people from this board who watched the progress of my last year...one of who is even a moderater here. Not typical results but the results none the less.
Immediately after the install it dropped down to 8.3 spinning all over the place and playing with shift points working on tire pressure and launching i was able to drop anonther 3 tenths with more left in it.
Like I said...my results aren't typical but they are factual.....
And again...I've been around here and over on the other board for several years now and lot of people know me. I have no reason to make things up cause the yahoos I race with would call me out on it
I'm sure the tci might be ok but why go with something thats not proven?? This guy is looking for help picking a converter and most of us on here feel that being a pioneer on your own money is a no no. Repeat what others have had success with.
I have seen nothing from tci as far as dyno info or any r&d that they have done. I'd love to see a dyno of one locked and unlocked so we could see the efficiency of their stuff. They haven't shown any test cars. These parts are so expensive I just can't understand why someone would go with something unproven. Sure the tci is a little cheaper but dude this is a major mod. Why skimp?? The only thing I see the tci has going for it is price and as john mentioned earlier you pretty much get what you pay for. I haven't seen the insdies of a tci like John has but according to him it ain't much. If you can't afford the yank or vig then why not just get a used one for the price of a new tci.
and the only reason I even mention this stuff is not to dis tci but to help this guy pick out a converter.

However....locking a converter on the dyno is a good way to tell its efficiency. If you show 400hp then lock the converter and its jumps up to 450hp then the converter would be 88% efficient. (not that great at math but thats pretty close). Then swap converters and you make 430 unlocked and should still make around 450 locked. Now your around 95+% efficient. This is where the top end mph gains can be achieved.
Stuff like this the only reason i can see for using a dyno but they are helpful for this and for tuning. Thats why I would love to a tci dyno'd.
You're swimming upstream on this one. While your TCI converter presents a good value for the dollar, it is NOT in the same league (performance or quality-wise) as a Yank Super Thruster 3500 or a Vig 3200. I've been hearing for several years now of racers dropping ET 7-9 tenth when running ST3500s and 2.73 gears. They're not on crack. They really did gain that much. Your gain of 5 tenths is very good, but you would have gained 2-4 tenths more had you spent a little more.
I wonder how much you'll need to spend now in additional mods to gain those lost tenths back?

Dustin , after the end or the summer , I will probably sell the converter and go with a ST3500 for better launches , I sold my ET streets and now have vette rims so my track times will now be a joke , I may try to round up some nittos for the new rims though just to have a little fun !!!
The ST3800 will absolutely destroy the Y3200 though. If you ever think about upgrading get the ST3800. Its just a little looser than the Y3200 but, you'll look like this the first time you punch it. If you get some longtube headers at the same time it'll feel like you just tripled that "Y3200 NOS shot"

First you get on here and try and get a dude to buy a piece of junk verter' and then then accuse the whole establishment of lying all the while your using vulgarity I wouldnt use in public. You need to get a grip.
Secondly the TCI verter is JUNK. The clearances inside it are inconsistent and i find it ludicrous that they would actually sell the paper weight to the general public.
TCI/LS1 = Junk
Hammertyme

I`d like to know specifically what makes it such a "paper weight" besides just writting on some board and your biased opinion.
What makes you such an expert? Sounds to me like Mike at Yank opened one up (as if he hasn`t done that before and talked all kinds of **** about Vig.) and couldn`t have nothing but bad things to say about it..just more Yank propaganda :thumb down: from a biased source...
TCI has been in bussines a long time, while I would never buy a converter called "Street Fighter" I do believe it may be a nice less expensive alternative and I fail to believe that it is more than a paper weight.
Instead of bashing TCI without proof show me 5 people where the converters are as you say...
Actually, then I~ll show you 20 people with crappy junk Yank converters with runout way out of spec, and/or balooned, shattering clutches, thrown codes, wrong stall..etc.
and 10 other people with Vig. that don`t lock up..
You said you have seen it firsthand by a teardown of a TCI verter that they are junk. I am not sayin that they are the best converter made....How else do you explain the cost....but I have had one in my car and other than the occasional SES lite I love it. I went to a Vig because I didnt know about a bigger TCI.I gained 6 tenths and 2 MPH with it. I gained 2 more tenths and lost a MPH with the Vig.
I think its a good alternative if you want quick results and you are lackin cash flow.
I honestly think 'case' was just tryin to put out all the options considering everyone on this board just jumps like crazy for Vig and Yank.
I say give TCI some credit for tryin.
PS....You guys could try Phoenix verters also.

Later, Stu
John was running the vig2800 with great results so I tried it and also recieved very good gains. Him along with others who were serious about racing began using the tp4400 with excellent results so when I was ready to go to the next level I played follow the leader. It works great also...little to great cause its over powering my suspension but that can be taken care of. And no ... i have no problem copying someone elses combo. Its the snart thing to do.
On down the rd if you get more serious about racin you;ll be kickin yourself for not getting a better converter cause 2-3 tenths is dang hard to come by.
And like i preach on constantly......buy used. Thats what i do. My current converter was bought new but I have sold several converters that were all in like new condition and the people I sold them to got them for about the price of a new tci.
Until someone puts up some excellent track times then I'll keep on saying get a yank or vig. If you have an a4 the verter is your foundation. Bad converter = bad performance. If tci could prove us wrong with any sort of r&d info more people would be willing to give them a chance. Only thing I have seen so far was a guy on here who worked for tci with a late 70 early 80 cutlass or similar car with a 4l60e and tci converter with like a 40x cubed carbed motor. THis was their test car for the ls1 converter. That should tell you something .
