Default Synthetic or Regular in your A4 with a YANK converter

I really need to know, installing a PY3600E 7 days from now. I decided with 12500 miles on the car I'd go ahead and put in a new tranny filter and do a complete refill.

Which leads me to this question what tranny fluid to use? I know I need Dexron III

Anyone have a brand preference.
So far on my list are.

Fillinthenamegeneric -- Regular
Aamco -- Regular
Mobil 1 -- Synthetic
Redline -- Synthetic

If you are reading this Ragtop I'd really appreciate your input as well.

Thanks everyone.

For what its worth, when I put in my Pro Yank tranny and SY3500, Mike told me not to use synthetic as it is "too" slippery. I use Type F as recommended by Raughammer and have had zero problems.

I use regular Dexron III based upon Mike's suggestion and the belief that you are better off to change the fluid more frequently than suggested in the owners manual.

I do not believe in synthetic transmission fluids. Mike at Yank also recommended to me that I stick with regular Dextron III. I use Valvoline Dextron III.

Put a drain plug in your trans pan (or better yet get a deep truck pan with a drain plug already built it) and drain and refill the fluid every other motor oil change or every motor oil change if you beat the trans a lot. That will help it live a longer life. No need to change the trans filter every 3,000 miles IMO, just drain and refill the fluid every 3,000 to 6,000. I would change the filter every 12,000 or so if you drive it hard though...

How hard is it to install a drain plug? Does the deeper pan have ground clearance problems with a stock ride height vehicle?

Thanks.

The worst thing about a synthetic fluid is that it swells your seals. This can cause the trans to have sealing problems at low temps. Not necessarily a leak, but problems with the piston seals and can cause slipping, no engagement etc...

Mike at Yank put a converter in my old 98 Z28. The converter came out of another car and had about 800 miles on it. Mike installed it in my car and changed the fluid and filter at the same time. The converter already had Mobil 1 syn in it and we put the same thing in the transmission. The car had about 11,000 miles on it at that time. After about 2 1/2 years and lots of drag racing with no add on trans cooler in the SE Texas heat, I had no problems. The car had over 52000 miles on it when I traded it in. He said the vehicles that race in the Baja 1000 used synthetic.

All the hype over Type F is BS.
Just run a good Dino dextron III....
I like Valvoline myself.
