my planetary gear set exploded. Lots of metal in my trans oil pan. It was covered under warranty in my case and they replaced it with some gear set called "the beast"? They promise it should never happen again now...
At the time my car was stock and it broke under casual driving.

usualy the powdered metal aftermarket planets will break.anyhow knowing how the plants work in a 4l60e will help track down the problem.was it the front or rear?in a 700 the 3.06 first gear is the produced by taking the held divided by the driven and adding one .this produces a 3.06 first gear with only one planetary set using the sun gear as input.the rear gear set is an idler in 1st.second is produced by the rear planet overdriving the 3.06 first gear ratio ,third is produced by locking 2 members of the front gearset forcing and releasing / driving the rear sun gear in direct drive and fourth is produced by overdriving the locked front planet.most tech have no idea how this gearset works, this is a very simple system although the first of its kind to reverse the held and driven to produce a high 1st gear via one gearset.

i had a 4.3 sonoma with a 3k stall and a built tranny and one day i was gettin on it and it shifted to 2nd and a loud boom, in forward gears it sounded like a supercharger and none worked but i did have reverse but it still made the noise.. got it home and even with it in park it still made the noise took it out got a local builder rebuild it and the rear planetary broke as if the shaft spun inside it and cracked it in 3 places..it was a 5 pinion too. but i think it was because it would shift from 1-2 and 2-3 and damn near break your neck..

when you buy planets, you HAVE to get the 5-pinion GM OEM SET! the 5 pinion AFTERMARKET PLANETARY GEARS ARE WEAKER THAN THE GM OEM 4 PLANETS!!!!!!

The use of five pinion gears for the input and reaction gear sets spreads the torque load so that less of the load is held by any one gear. These gears are made of powdered metal, which GM claims allows for a higher overall strength. (After market 5 pinion planet gears aren't as strong as OEM 4 pinion planet gears.)

this was from GM, and there was no loud sound, just went out, i had reverse and everything like you did, and my transmission was not set up to slam into gear at all, it just went out all of a sudden, and it cracked in front, no damage to the teeth what so ever on it either
