th400 have to manually shift? better et?
will I have to manually shift the car at the track for a good et? or will it shift itself at like 6300 rpm?
what exactly is a lock up converter? this needed?
will I get a better et with the th400?
thanks!
As far as the ET's dropping, I dunno. I am waiting on my driveshaft to be made right now.
Yes you will have to manually shift the car.
There is no lock up convertor for these trannies. (There is but the tranny/convertor combo is mega $$$)
You should be slower with the TH-400. It's heavier, more parasitic, and has a less than desirable 2.48 1st gear ratio (this can be changed to 2.75 for an extra $400 or so.) The 1st gear of the 4L60-E is 3.06.
Consider that to have the same gearing advantage of a 3.06 1st gear with a 4.10 rearend gear you would have to have a 4.56 rearend gear with a 2.75 1st gear, for example.
You can have a TH-400 setup to auto shift. They used to come like that from the factory ya know.

NO ****???? Gee I never knew that. If you were putting it in a station wagon and want a modulator to control when it shifts, that would be fine.
Tim
I have the "stock"..."race built" Th400 w/a brake....I got stock gearing, but it can handle a butt load of HP...so I never have to worry...first gear has a tiny little delay, but I still pull pretty hard...

I also would have thought you would know that there have been alot of folks to run plenty fast with auto shifting 400s. Learn something new every day, huh?
